To love a horse for twenty years is a rare privilege; to say goodbye to one who shared two decades of your sanctuary’s story is a heartbreak words can barely hold. This morning, our cherished miniature horse, Taffy, who was 38 years old, crossed the rainbow bridge, leaving an imprint on California Coastal Horse Rescue far greater than her diminutive size.
Taffy came to us in the wake of an ending, arriving after the Ojai Valley Inn closed its stables. Over the past two decades, the CCHR ranch evolved, seasons turned, and hundreds of horses found hope within our fences - and through it all, Taffy was our constant.
She possessed the kind of quiet wisdom unique to minis who know their worth. Taffy never bothered with the pretense of being small; she ruled her corner of the ranch with sovereign authority and a charming, steadfast stubbornness that endeared her to everyone who crossed her path. At mealtime, she made her expectations known, greeting the feed cart with that unmistakable, low chortle of a whinny that demanded prompt service. To kneel in the dirt beside her was an immediate lesson in presence - a chance to rest your hand against her warm shoulder and feel the noise of the outside world simply fall away.
She saw two decades of volunteer love and care, lazy afternoon naps in the sun, and the steady, enduring work of giving horses second chances. In many ways, she was the quiet heart of our rescue family, a reminder that grace, spirit, and legacy aren’t measured in hands high, but in the depth of the love left behind.
Rest gently, sweet girl. Thank you for sharing your long, beautiful life with us. The pastures on the other side of the bridge have gained a beautiful new girl, and our valley will carry your spirit in every warm breeze that blows.
