Crossroads Rescue Ranch

Crossroads Rescue Ranch CRR a sanctuary where horses & women w/troubled pasts heal through innovative equine-therapy programs

Wendy and Caitlyn were born and raised on grandpas ranch with working horses. Both experiencing the sadness of seeing these beautiful creatures get auctioned off or left by the wayside. So, joining together, they started Crossroads Rescue Ranch in late 2022 as a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization in Central California, with a mission to end the abuse, neglect, and slaughter of horses, ponies, donk

eys, mules, and burros through rescue and foster care. Grandpa is letting them use a some of the acreage of the family ranch acres for CRR. So, CRR is set to move from this borrowed land to their own in 2023 and make room for more rescues and retirements for these beautiful creatures. Here at Crossroads, we use 100% of money generated to rescue, love, heal, and rehabilitate horses who are in desperate need for a second chance. All while restoring their trust in humankind, and finding them safe, loving, permanent adoptive homes. We are dedicated to rescuing horses from neglect, abuse, abandonment, slaughter, as well as the successful retirement of working equines. We strive to improve the lives of horses by providing a safe haven for healing and rehabilitation, while working with our equine partners to educate, inspire, and improve the lives of youth and their families while improving public awareness and knowledge regarding the standards of care necessary to insure the health and safety of all equines.

Good morning from Crossroads. 🌅🐴

Out here, the day starts quietly — just the sound of hooves in the grass, the cool morning air, and a new chance for healing.

Every sunrise at the ranch is another opportunity for these horses to move further from their past and closer to the future they deserve. Patience, trust, and small steps forward — that’s how real rehabilitation happens.

Grateful for mornings like this and the lives we get to help change along the way.

At Crossroads Rescue Ranch, rescue is only the beginning.

Many people ask why we don’t adopt out all of our horses—and the answer is simple: some horses are meant for more than just survival. They’re meant to help others heal.

Our rehabilitated program horses go through extensive physical, emotional, and behavioral training to prepare them for therapeutic work. These are horses who demonstrate exceptional patience, resilience, emotional intelligence, and trust—often after surviving neglect, abuse, or the slaughter pipeline themselves.

Once cleared by veterinary care and rehabilitation, select horses continue into:

• Trauma-informed therapeutic programs supporting women with battered and abusive pasts
• Adaptive and assisted programs for individuals with disabilities
• Groundwork-based emotional regulation and confidence-building sessions
• Structured environments focused on safety, predictability, and connection

Not every horse is suited for this work—and that’s okay. It takes a very special temperament, a deep level of trust, and a willingness to engage calmly with people who are learning to feel safe again.

For the other rescues who come through our gates:

• Some are rehabilitated and adopted into carefully screened, permanent homes
• Some are transferred to partner sanctuaries or rescues better suited to their long-term needs
• Some remain with us for lifetime sanctuary care due to medical or behavioral limitations

Every horse receives what they need—not what’s easiest.

We don’t just save horses. We rebuild them. And in doing so, they help rebuild people.

This is why Crossroads exists. This is why our work goes beyond rescue. This is why every life here matters.

If you support trauma-informed healing, second chances, and long-term impact—this is your community.

Meet COCO-FIREBALL 🔥🐴

This little guy officially joined the Crossroads family this week, and he’s already living up to his name. Coco-Fireball came in with a beautiful baby fuzz coat, a big personality, and a spark of energy that’s impossible to miss.

At intake, Coco-Fireball measured 12 hands and 301 lbs, estimated to be 6–8 months old. For context, a healthy c**t at that age is typically closer to 13–14 hands and 400–500 lbs, depending on breeding. Based on his build and movement, we believe Coco may be an Azteca, and he still has a lot of growing—and healing—ahead of him.

Over the weekend, we made some meaningful progress. We were able to get a halter on him, and while he’s clearly nervous and unsure, he’s also incredibly trusting for a c**t who’s been through so much. We worked gently on his hooves—he’s more comfortable picking up his back feet, but stretching his front feet is still hard for him. Every small step counts, and he’s trying.

Coco-Fireball is safe now. He’s learning, adjusting, and beginning the long journey from survival to stability.

💛 If you’d like to help support Coco-Fireball’s recovery, donations go directly toward his feed, veterinary care, farrier work, and ongoing training. Every contribution—big or small—helps give him the healthy, secure future he deserves.

Follow along for updates on Coco-Fireball and the others as we continue their rehabilitation and give them the future they deserve.

Two months ago, we received a quiet message about a small group of animals that “might need help.”

What we were told did not prepare us for what we found.

After weeks of follow-ups and conversations, the owner finally agreed to surrender them this past week. When we arrived, the condition of these animals was far more severe than described.

Two grey mares—nothing but bone beneath their skin.

A black mare and a c**t whose baby fuzz masked how malnourished they truly were.
And an alpaca who hadn’t known proper care in who knows how long—barbed wire tangled deep in its coat, teeth neglected, hooves overgrown and painful.

As a small rescue, we make decisions with humility and responsibility. We know our limits, and the care these animals needed went beyond what we could safely provide alone. That’s when community mattered most.

We reached out to a larger, local rescue here in Bakersfield—and without hesitation, they stepped in. Because of that collaboration, the two grey mares and the alpaca are now receiving intensive care, proper nutrition, medical attention, and—most importantly—love.

This is why we do what we do.

Rescue doesn’t always mean we keep every animal ourselves. Sometimes it means being the bridge—stepping in when no one else will, advocating when voices are ignored, and making sure each life ends up where it has the best chance to heal.

Every call we answer.
Every follow-up we make.
Every difficult decision.

It’s all done so these animals don’t slip through the cracks.

If you’ve ever wondered why rescues need support even when the animals don’t stay on site—this is it. Transport, coordination, medical intake, emergency response, and partnerships all take resources.

Your support helps us say “yes” when the next call comes in.

And it will.

Horses don’t end up here because they were loved — they end up here because the world failed them. Starved. Unwanted. Forgotten. Standing alone in auction pens with no voice and no safety net.

Crossroads Rescue Ranch exists to change that story.

We step into the darkest places — the slaughter pipeline, neglect cases, abandonment — and we choose the ones who have been given up on. We choose the thin ones. The scared ones. The ones trembling in the corner because humans were never kind to them.

And we don’t just rescue them —
We rehabilitate, restore trust, provide medical care, and rebuild body and spirit. One day at a time. One soft touch at a time. One meal at a time.
Because every horse deserves a chance to feel safe.

Every horse deserves dignity.

Every horse deserves a future.

Your support helps us continue this work — responsibly, ethically, and with full transparency. When you give, you help transform fear into peace… neglect into nourishment… survival into a new beginning.

Together, we shine a light where others turn away.

Together, we rewrite their story.

Christmas Eve at Crossroads Rescue Ranch is quiet, reflective, and full of gratitude. 🎄🐴

As the lights glow and the night settles in, our herd rests safely—warm, fed, and cared for—because of the compassion of this community.

Tonight, we’re reminded that rescue is an act of hope, and healing is a gift made possible by those who choose to support second chances.

From our horses to the people they help serve, we are deeply thankful for every sponsor, volunteer, and supporter who makes this mission possible. Wishing you peace, warmth, and comfort this Christmas Eve.

First light of winter, and the herd greets it with quiet strength. ❄️🐴
As the season changes, so does the work—slower mornings, deeper bonds, and a renewed focus on care, connection, and purpose. At Crossroads Rescue Ranch, winter is a reminder that healing doesn’t stop when it gets cold. It’s in these still moments that trust grows and resilience takes root, for both our rescue horses and the people they help.

A new season. The same mission. Steady, grounded, and moving forward together.

12/20/2025

Slow motion. Steady hands. A second chance in motion. 🐴
This is Artemis—once rescued from a dark future, now growing into one of the young horses who helps make our programs possible. In this quiet moment, our founder works with him patiently, building trust, confidence, and purpose step by step.
Because of the support of our sponsors and community, horses like Artemis don’t just survive—they thrive. And in return, they help others heal, grow, and find their own strength through our equine-assisted programs. This is what rescue looks like when hope is given time to work.

12/20/2025

Every touch holds possibility.
In moments like this, healing begins—where rescued horses and women who have experienced the worst of the world meet in quiet understanding. At Crossroads Rescue Ranch, our purpose goes beyond rescue. We create space for trust to return, for strength to be rebuilt, and for new ventures to take shape through equine-assisted healing.
This is where trauma softens, confidence grows, and tomorrow feels possible again.
