One more day until the Ogunquit Home & Garden Tour and we could not be more excited! People are putting in bids for our auction, have you? Today I'm spotlighting our final auction items, all in the Wellness Category! Rett's Roost is all about wellness and holistic healing. It's literally our mission. So bid on some self-care and know that you're also offering self-care to a child or parent in our childhood cancer community.

I'd also like to share one more fact for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Coffee... in this country, we love our fancy lattes and sweet foam and cold brew. But do you realize what you spend each year? I know I do. I'm as guilty as anyone. What if we shifted that money to childhood cancer research? Because we all know our government's priorities are not focused on the #1 disease killer of children.

Childhood cancer not only ruins families emotionally, but also financially. In this country, we pay a lot for healthcare, and a cancer diagnosis can bankrupt you. Wouldn't it be nice if all kids with cancer could receive free treatment? It's one thing I think we can all agree on no matter what side of the aisle we're on.

So today, consider using some of this month's coffee budget to bid on an auction item. Don't miss out... the auction closes Saturday at 2pm. Remember you do not need to be present to win, but all physical items must be picked up in Wells or Ogunquit. Gift cards can be mailed!

For childhood cancer awareness month, please take a moment to understand its impact on the child and their family. You may see the cute bald children on the St. Jude commercials and think, "Well, they lose their hair, but look at those smiles!" Nothing against St. Jude, who welcomed Rett through its doors, and has cured so many kids of rare and aggressive cancers, but there is so much more pain and suffering behind closed doors.

Cancer cannot take everything from a child, however. The community of support–the love, the hope, the friendships formed–it cannot "conquer the spirit" of the people that step up and stand by that child's side. Like all of you, those that support Rett's Roost year after year. We are stronger than childhood cancer, together.

This quote, from a pediatric oncologist, is not hyperbolic. Treatment for childhood cancer, even the one that people think of as the "easy cancer", leukemia, is grueling and extremely dangerous. So much can go wrong. Often the treatments are what take a child's life, not the cancer itself. Seeing your child or sibling endure this suffering is one of the reasons why Rett's Roost exists. We provide mental wellness support to help ease the trauma of the child undergoing the treatment, as well as those that have to watch. There is not one cancer parent we've ever met that has not wished they could take the place of their child.

For this reason, we hope you consider bidding on our online auction. We have only 4 days until the auction closes and there are many prizes that you can still get for way under the fair market value. Today we'll share the most common stats about childhood cancer. Most people don't realize that 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in the U.S. alone. And that 1 in 6 of those kids won't live 5 years past their diagnosis. Even more won't live past 10 or 20 years. Cancer steals approximately 70 life -years from our kids, yet only 4% of the federal government's cancer budget goes to helping researchers find more treatments and cures. This is a travesty, and we should all be screaming from the rooftops about it!

Childhood cancer does not discriminate. No matter if you are white, black, hispanic, asian, indigenous, wealthy, poor, rural, urban, healthy, or not. The children cancer chooses are completely random, and the causes primarily unknown.

Remember that when you consider supporting Rett's Roost. Think about what it feels like to go out to eat at any of these lovely establishments, and what it might feel like to be living in the hospital, eating the same cafeteria food day after day, wishing your child, sick from chemo, would just eat something that day.

Tomorrow, for the start of childhood cancer awareness month, we are opening bidding for our first ever online auction and we couldn’t be more excited! We have over 80 incredible items listed… everything from restaurant gift cards, hotel and home stays, excursions on the water, sports activities, live entertainment, and art. All physical items can be viewed at Amy Kelly on Sept 19th, the day of the home tour.
