Healthy Rivers Ogunquit

Healthy Rivers Ogunquit Healthy Rivers Ogunquit, Inc. (HeRO) is an alliance of concerned businesses, residents, town official

HeRO's volunteer-driven teams work to reduce the pollutants entering our rivers from stormwater runoff, lawn chemicals, automobile leaks and spills, faulty septic and sewer systems, animal waste, and plain-old trash. We teach river-friendly land practices and plant trees and shrubs to filter polluted runoff. We sponsor beach and river cleanups and monitor the condition of our local waterways. We encourage our neighbors and educate our guests because we can do better, together!

Our Canines for Clean Water program got a burst of fresh energy on Saturday from our friends in the Wells High School Environmental Club. So excited to have them on our team!!
They welcomed new recruits to our Clean Water Pledge and helped say hello to many familiar pups on the beach. Always wonderful to collaborate with - and learn from- our future leaders!

So many good doggies on Ogunquit Beach today! Our Canines for Clean Water program kicked off its second year by meeting up with old friends and enlisting a dozen new recruits to the Clean Water Pledge.
Sept 9 is the first day that dogs are allowed back on Ogunquit Beach, and the pups were delighted. For more photos from the day’s fun, check out

Fantastic effort today! Thank you to the team that came out to Ogunquit Beach on this beautiful Sunday to help remove trash. And 👍 to OgtFD Chief Osgood for shuttling members of the crew to the Footbridge, so that we could clean end-to-end. Many hands made FUN work :)

Had a great morning on Brave Boat Harbor with our new friends at Southern Maine Sustainable Shellfish!

Thank you to Mike, Sam, and Billy for giving us a tour of their green crab operation. We got a fascinating lesson in identifying the signs that these crabs are ready to molt, and had a chance to apply this at the sorting table.

If you see soft shell green crabs on the menu of your local dining establishment, they likely come from SMSS. Help a local business “do right” by the river - give them a try!

How do you catch 3,000 crabs??.. With a LOT of help!!

Meet HeRO’s lead intern, Sam Cahaly (Colby ‘24.)
Sam lends his positive attitude to everything we do — even baiting crab traps or picking up trash 🤢—and has been a really valuable member of our summer team. Welcome, Sam!

Ogunquit’s Green Crab Patrol is off to a great start!!

Small but mighty — mighty destructive, to be precise(!) — European green crabs have upset the delicate balance in our estuary. With a little help from our friends, we have caught, measured, and logged 1,889 crabs in our first four weeks. Join the wave of citizen scientists trying to protect our clams, mussels, and native crabs from the jaws of this voracious predator... Come crabbing with us! Next events are:
Sat 7/23 on the river in front of the Beachmere from 1-3;
Mon 7/25 at Riverside Beach from 3-5; and Tuesday 7/26 at the Footbridge from 10-11:30.
