Known medically as bronchiolitis obliterans, this disease scars the lungs' smallest airways, causing persistent coughing, wheezing, exhaustion, and shortness of breath.
Previously linked to diacetyl exposure in popcorn factories, the condition is now associated with numerous chemicals in e-cigarette vapors.
Many flavoring compounds, safe for consumption, turn toxic when heated and inhaled, bypassing the body’s natural defenses and directly harming the lungs and bloodstream.
The popularity of va**ng, especially among youths attracted to sweet and fruity flavors, poses a significant health risk. With over 180 flavoring agents in e-liquids—some degrading into untested or harmful substances when heated—experts call for urgent regulatory measures.
The teen’s severe diagnosis highlights the dangers of inhaling chemicals deemed safe for food but catastrophic when vaped, emphasizing the need for tighter regulations and greater public education to prevent irreversible harm.
