OUR FEBRUARY MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Saturday, February 28th, 10:00 a.m. live in the Community Room on Pilgrim Pathway and Zoom online at:

Meeting ID: 868 2934 2160
ALL ARE WELCOME!

Our guest speaker this month is not President James Garfield. In celebration of President’s Day, the OGCA’s Past President Richard Williams will tell us about a fascinating, but little known bit of local history about President Garfield’s last trip to New Jersey.

On Tuesday, September 16, 1881, a gravely wounded President Garfield who had been shot the previous July by an eccentric job seeker in a Washington, D.C. train station, was moved by train from the White House to an ocean front cottage in Elberon, N.J., where it was hoped the sea air would miraculously speed his recovery.

Richard will recount the incredible story of that complex train journey, and how 330 railroad men aided by the citizens of Elberon and Long Branch had worked together to lay – overnight the night before - a 5/8 mile train track from the Elberon train station to the seaside cottage to facilitate the final leg of Garfield’s move.

Richard has been delving into the history behind President Garfield’s move to Elberon and will give us an informative and entertaining presentation on this episode in our local history.

It’s Budget Time in Neptune….

It’s been quiet in Ocean Grove as we’ve all been buried under an unending blanket of snow. But budgets for the next fiscal year for both Neptune and the Neptune Schools are being developed. We’ll have updates and schedules for budget hearings and adoption as well as updates on other Neptune news and happenings in town. The budgets for our local government directly impact our property taxes. We’ll let you know how to follow the budget process and when you can express your views to our elected officials.

Are you looking for a local calendar of events, Dell O'Hara’s Home Research Guide, information on the Neptune Schools Budget Task Force, information on why Ocean Grove residents have to pay property taxes even though we lease our land from the OGCMA? All of this information and more is available on our website at www.TheOGCA.org.
