This Women’s History Month, we recognize a harsh reality: 1 in 5 women in California become unhoused while fleeing domestic violence, and many experience gender-based violence again once unhoused. Without safe, stable housing, women are exposed to assault, harassment, and exploitation.

At Just Homes, we know that housing is a first step to safety. By building and preserving deeply affordable, sustainable homes, we create environments where people of every gender can live free from fear and have the ability to heal and thrive. Just housing is more than shelter — it’s protection, stability, and dignity.

This Women’s History Month, we reaffirm that housing justice is gender justice, and that every woman deserves a safe place to call home. We must continue working together to ensure safe, stable housing for all.

✨ Today, and every day, we honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. ✨

In 1966, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led the Chicago Freedom Movement to challenge segregated housing, predatory landlords, and policies that trapped families in unsafe,unaffordable homes. This work made housing justice a core part of civil rights and paved the way for the Fair Housing Act of 1968.

Despite the work of Dr. King and of everyone who has carried on his legacy, our communities experience many of the same housing problems today. Unhealthy and
unsafe homes, discriminatory housing practices, and increasingly unaffordable rents continue to impact our communities, especially black communities and
communities of color. In Oakland alone, 5,485 of our neighbors live unhoused, the vast majority of whom are black and people of color.

Like Dr. King and his contemporaries, we believe housing stability is foundational to dignity, health, and self-determination—a right no one should have to fight to keep.

Stay connected with us as we endeavor to carry on Dr. King’s legacy by resourcing our unhoused neighbors with high-quality, permanently affordable housing, so they can build power, and live lives of joy and well-being.

That’s why part of our project is building a safe, new backyard fence. This isn’t just maintenance—it’s building a foundation for joy. It’s where kids can ride their bikes safely and families can gather to share meals and stories.

A home should heal, not harm. That’s why we’re building healthy, fossil-fuel-free homes with the help of 🍃

Gas appliances in homes are a source of indoor air pollution, linked to asthma and other respiratory illnesses, especially in children. Our campaign funds the complete decarbonization of this building—replacing old gas systems with clean, efficient electric heating, cooking, and hot water.
