People's Kitchen Collective

People's Kitchen Collective Food is where we meet, where we build, where we struggle, and where we survive Food is where we meet, where we build, where we struggle, and where we survive.

The People’s Kitchen Collective (PKC) works at the intersection of art and activism as a food-centered political education project. Based in Oakland, California, our creative practices reflect the diverse histories and backgrounds of collective members Sita Kuratomi Bhaumik, Jocelyn Jackson, and Saqib Keval. Written in our family's recipes are the maps of our migrations and the stories of our resi

lience. It is from this foundation that we create immersive experiences that celebrate centuries of shared struggle.

Thank you WFF for screening the Central Coast portion of our documentary! Incredible community activist groups Tierras Milperas, Bitter Cotyledons, and more are featured. Repost from

Where We Belong is a powerful shorts program exploring home, land, sanctuary, and activism.

These stories center immigrant families fighting for protection, unhoused women building community in the redwoods of Santa Cruz, and radical hospitality rooted in food justice and collective care. 🌎🏡🌱

This is about dignity. This is about resistance. This is about who gets to belong.

Featuring:
* “Expanding Sanctuary” by Kristal Sotomayor
* “HomeTown HomeLess” by Maleah Rose Welsh
* “EARTH SEED: A People’s Journey of Radical Hospitality” by Fox Nakai & Jocelyn Jackson

EARTH SEED centers a pilgrimage through California from present-day Los Angeles to Mendocino Woodlands that happened from March – June 2023. Rooted in Octavia Butler’s Parables series, the legacy of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, and the diaspora of the global south, EARTH SEED enacts radical hospitality as a survival practice. It does so by deepening our relationships with BIPOC activists, artists, educators, farmers, youth, and elders.

People’s Kitchen Collective is known as a community dining project that intersects art, food, and social justice. The elders and ancestors gave us a new assignment when we saw what was possible when we combine our roots in the BPP Survival Programs and the future worlds of Octavia Butler’s Parable series. The powerful full length documentary film EARTH SEED: A People’s Journey of Radical Hospitality was created.

We encourage you to collect your people and come join us out on our national tour so you can be challenged and inspired to RISK CHANGE together!

Feeling deep gratitude after this year’s Free Breakfast, honoring the Black Panther Party Survival Programs at Life is Living 2025 this past Saturday. It’s our favorite thing to serve the community at Life is Living! We’ve been showing up every year since 2012 and it’s incredible to now be the all over Executive Producer of the festival too!

We couldn’t have done the breakfast this year without the Black Panther Party, Lil’ Bobby Hutton/DeFremery Park, Understory, Reems, T’Chaka, Earthseed Farm, mak-‘amham, Emory Douglas, Red Bay Coffee, World Centric, Ayana Ivery Designs, our volunteers, PKC Crew Past, Present, & Future, and absolutely everyone that made this year so beautiful!

One of the questions we get a lot during our discussions after screenings is asking after our community partners. We deeply appreciate how audiences feel connected and invested in their work and their wellbeing.

Tierras Milperas is one of our community partners from the Central Coast section of our Journey. They were facing eviction and recovery from levee flooding during our filming. It felt like they embraced gathering in their garden to cook for one another and share our stories even more because of these heartaches. It was humbling to witness their fierce love for community, their radical hospitality.

This past Sunday they asked us to join them on their new plot of land teeming with a gorgeous abundance of corn, chilis, tomatillos, beans, marigolds, and more. This gathering was an invitation to use their fresh ingredients in some of our crew’s cultural recipes, to learn new stories from this cherished harvest.

Hai made a delicious chili Sa te from Hai’s Vietnamese family and Jocelyn made a flavorful ceebu jën from her roots in Western Africa and Tommy brought the hibiscus tea he loves to make. The Tierras Milperas crew blessed us with their fresh ground blue masa for the exquisite tortillas. The fire roasted salsa was the gift that kept on giving.

Such a good day! And another community partner, Bitter Cotyledons, joined us at the table as well. This is what EARTH SEED is all about. Why we dove into making this call to action film that we hope keeps creating a positive impact around the country throughout our national tour. Keep practicing life and love and survival together!
