California Nurses Association has grown from 17,000 RNs in 1995, located primarily in Northern California, to more than 70,000 RNs in 200 facilities across the state. ng the lowest-paid professionals, they had no retirement, and worked every weekend. Since 1992 we aggressively organized, quadrupling our membership, resulting in winning safe staffing conditions, secure retirement, and salaries commensurate with experience. We have repeatedly stepped outside the walls of our facilities in our obligation as patient advocates, such as our 13-year fight to win and defend California’s historic safe staffing ratios. As nurses, as patient advocates, we believe we must continue to change this system so that everyone has access to affordable, universal healthcare based on a single standard of high-quality care for all.
