A Summer book recommendation by E. Owusu, FSAAMLO Student Intern. “Exodusters: Black migration to Kansas after Reconstruction” by Nell Irvin Painter. I wanted to recommend this book due to the fact that I haven’t heard many stories of the black experience in midwestern states. When you hear about the black experience during segregated times, you always hear people talk about the South, the North, or the western states. It's never midwestern, and I think it’s very cool that we get the chance to read about the black experience there. All stories deserve to be shared don't let people keep you from history like this!

A classic book selection by E. Owusu, FSAAMLO Student Intern. "The only lasting truth Is Change" - Octavia E. Butler
“Parable of the Sower” by Octavia E. Butler. Parable of the Sower is an absolutely excellent piece of text. We are pulled into a dystopian society that has very close similarities to ours. It makes us question what's in the media and our own lives. There are many books on dystopian societies, yet there are none focused on a black female MC. To have a book that talks about a realistic dystopian society and the black experience is rare, and I would recommend this book to anyone.

A Summer book selection by E. Owusu, FSAAMLO Student Intern. A book that I highly recommend is “Bury My Bones but Keep My Words: African Tales for Retelling. Retold by Tony Fairman & illustrated by Meshack Asare. The reason I chose this book is the very compelling title. We know the details of this genocide of the people in Africa but we don't know every single detail. These were people who had families, lovers, their own culture, and even their own stories, and they all just got taken from them. The phrase “Bury my bones but keep my words” shows us how the stories made by African people will go on to live for many years to come, even if the people are now deceased. By sharing this book with you all I want to make sure that we can help keep their words.
