WARNING: These are not pretty pictures!
We had a call about a stranded sea turtle near the Lighthouse this afternoon. Upon arrival we found the deceased juvenile Kemp's Ridley at the water's edge. Someone came by and told us that a family had picked up the turtle and passed it around as they took pictures with it.
Top 2 Reasons You Should Not Touch A Sea Turtle:
#1- All Sea turtles, especially deceased ones, can carry a variety of bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic diseases, some of which may pose risks to humans..
#2- It is against the law! All sea turtle species are protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in the United States, making it illegal to harass, harm, or touch them (even if they are deceased).
If you see a sea turtle on the beach, please call us ASAP. Call 910-368-6323 day or night. We are permitted by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission to care for live or deceased turtles on the beach.
P.S. If you were the family that picked up the turtle and passed it around, we hope you washed your hands really well!
