Just a few months ago, MSTA members answered the call to write Governor Kehoe and encourage him to appoint a practicing classroom teacher to the Missouri State Board of Education.Thank you to everyone who took the time to advocate for a teacher's voice at the table.

Before you vote next week, review MSTA’s current position on Amendment 5. MSTA is also endorsing candidates, Michael Todd for Missouri State House District 32 & Terry Thompson House District 53. MSTA endorses candidates that reflect the commitment to advocating for quality public education and the educators who serve Missouri’s students.

MSTA opposes Amendment 5. ❌

The Missouri State Teachers Association opposes Amendment 5 based on MSTA Adopted Resolutions.

The legislature passed the proposed constitutional amendment asking voters whether to allow lawmakers to phase out the state income tax and replace it with an expanded sales tax. Passing the amendment would give broad authority over the tax code to the same legislature responsible for leaving public schools more than $200 million underfunded.

Based on MSTA Adopted Resolutions, MSTA opposes Amendment 5. The risk is too great that MSTA members see a net negative in this proposed tax shift, both professionally and personally.

We hope everyone is having a great summer! Some of our executive board went to the MSTA leadership conference in Columbia this month. We got to learn a lot about various parts of leading our local CTO chapter, membership, and upcoming legislative issues. We also had a keynote speaker, Devin Seibold, who is a comedian and former teacher. Not only did we have lots of laughs, but we were educated on the importance of bringing laughter into the classroom to build connections.

We are always looking for CTO members who are interested in getting more involved with our chapter. Please reach out to any of us!

Hey guys! Help MSTA by writing a letter to Governor Kehoe requesting a classroom teacher be appointed to the Missouri State Board of Education.

Join MSTA in advocating for a teacher on the State Board of Education. 📣

Missouri law requires an active classroom teacher to serve as a non-voting member of the State Board of Education, but that seat has remained empty since the law was passed more than seven years ago.

With the upcoming retirement of Commissioner of Education Dr. Karla Eslinger, it is imperative that a teacher be appointed to the State Board, so current educators have a seat at the table as a new commissioner is considered.
