We’ve finished planting our summer veggie garden at Home Ground Habitats! Paloma, our garden dog, was taking a long nap after a full day of working in the garden. She gave all the direction and did all the work. 😉

We focused on companion planting, selecting herbs, veggies, and flowers that grow well together -enhancing growth, repelling pests, improving soil health, and maximizing garden space!

Can’t wait to enjoy tomatoes, peas, eggplants, cucumbers, basil, melons, and more!

Volume up!! 🔊
This we’re sharing this special moment of Western Bluebird parents working together to feed their babies, nested in a bird box in our garden. 🤩

Growing a habitat garden is critical in supporting the interconnected network of an ecosystem. Healthy soils -teeming with fungi, bacteria, and worms- support native plants, which host a plethora of insects that form the base of the food web that birds and their babies depend on.

🩵Western Bluebirds feed their young entirely on insects and larvae (which you can see in this video!) This is why pesticide, herbicide, and chemical-free gardens are so important -to not poison their food source.
🩵They are also cavity nesters and with the loss of many old-growth trees, installing proper nest boxes helps their species recover from decline.

We're so happy to support this family of Western Bluebirds at Home Ground Habitats!

Campers will be taking a closer look at plants, gardens, ponds, and soil habitats. This camp is focused on nature play, learning, and exploring curiosities in the garden. Each day infused with science, art, creativity, and fun!

If financial support will allow your child to join, we have scholarships available.
Email Ayano, [email protected] to register and secure your child's spot!

I can’t bee-lieve we missed out on posting for , so this we’re showcasing one of our most prevalent pollinators in the garden, the Western honey bee (Apis mellifera).

With over 1,600 California native bees to think about, you can support them in a number of ways in your habitat garden:
1. Plant a diverse amount of native pollinator plants in your garden
2. Select plants that bloom year round, extending food availability
3. 70% of our CA bees are ground nesters, so leave a few areas in your garden free of ground cover or mulch
4. Provide water! A shallow dish with pebbles or marbles will do
5. Eliminate chemicals from your garden (❌insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides❌)

Visit Home Ground Habitats to get started in creating your own Habitat Garden and oasis for our native bees!

This we’re highlighting the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus)! They have been flying around all over the garden and scouting out our milkweed patches to create the next generation of monarchs.

We love this time of year - we get to spot the caterpillars, watch them grow, look for chrysalises, and witness their final, spectacular stage of metamorphosis!

At Home Ground Habitats, we grow and sell 2 species of native CA milkweed the monarchs use as their host plants.
1. Narrowleaf Milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis)
2. Showy Milkweed (Asclepias speciosa)

Stay tuned to witness them eclose hopefully soon!🤞

We're excited to be tabling at this upcoming event hosted by our friends at the Museum of the American Indian!

Join us at Miwok Park on Saturday, May 16 from 2–4pm for a free workshop covering native plant gardening and landscaping, seed collecting and exchange, and Indigenous community initiatives including land sovereignty, and stewardship.

This is exactly the kind of community gathering we love to be part of — come say hi, learn something new, and connect with people who care deeply about the land. 🌱

What a beautiful day at Home Ground Habitats! 🌿

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Eco-Friendly Garden Tour! Our visitors, volunteers, supporters, and partners made the day truly special. From tabling to presentations, the garden was buzzing with laughter, conversation, and curiosity — and we wouldn't have it any other way.

So much gratitude to the Sonoma-Marin Water Saving Partnership and others for bringing this celebration of sustainable gardens to life for its 16th year. We can't wait for this fall! 💚
