EXPERIENCED TUBE FEEDER NEEDED - 1 DAY OLD KITTENS

Wise County Humane Society has a mother cat who gave birth to 8 kittens last night. She is not providing any care to these kittens at all and one has already died. We are trying to stabilize the remaining 7 kittens and hope that we can get them off to a rescue who specializes in neonates. If there is anyone in the area with tube feeding experience, please reach out to our director Julia Winston at 276-455-6070.

Wise County Humane Society volunteers have been busy with numerous emergencies this spring, any help is appreciated!

From our volunteer Helen Mays:

I am currently fostering Binx and his lady love Winny, who is heavily pregnant with his kittens (they're an extremely bonded pair). Binx and Winny are two of fifteen cats and kittens rescued from living in a sewer drain in Appalachia after being tossed out carelessly by their owners to fend for themselves. Twelve have already been sent to rescue without the remaining three due to two, Camilla and Binx, needing immediate medical assistance. Unfortunately baby Camilla passed away on the operating table at just six months old due to a massive hernia. πŸ₯²

Binx had to be rushed to the vet as he had been attacked by an animal that left deep holes in his chest, so deep my fingers literally slipped inside them as I tried to pick him up, and more wounds on his paw and neck. He had to be sedated immediately as his wounds were so extensive. After his release, he had to go back several times for more antibiotics and to have the ooze pouring out of his chest from his puncture wounds sent out to be cultured. We just received the diagnosis of a staph infection yesterday. The staph was seeping out of his wounds so extensively it felt like he took a bath in slime! I couldn't touch him without my hands and clothes getting covered in it 🀒 It is also causing his hair to fall off his skin.

He was starting to heal up some, but sadly his breathing took a turn during the night last night. It was so labored he had to be rushed to the vet this morning where he was put on oxygen immediately and was hospitalized instead of getting to go on to rescue with Winny like planned. After hours of trying to figure out the best course of action for Binx and Winny, I made the decision at 3am to keep Winny, fully knowing the possibility doing so could cause more medical bills to pile up. I just couldn't bear to send her on without him. They love each other so much, are always together and she has been his comfort as he's been recovering from his wounds. She was even laying with or standing by him all morning while I watched him breathe. At one point she stood over him and he just laid his head on her pregnant belly for a full minute for comfort. Now that he's gotten sick, with possible pneumonia or cancer, still waiting on a diagnosis, I think it's best to make sure they stay together.

We also currently have two cats who need full mouth extractions, Mick and Stitch. Mick was taken from the McDonald's drive through in Wise along with his sibling who sadly passed away. Mick is an older gentleman who needs a second chance at a loving indoor life for however many years he has left. Stitch was taken from a hoarding situation and is in so much pain he cries when he eats pate, he can only lick liquid foods at the moment 😒 πŸ’”

My poor foster baby Kylie who was taken from the dollar store parking lot two months ago had a horrendous breathing problem to the point she slept on her vaporizer and treated it like her best friend. She was in and out of the vet's office where she sadly passed away Monday morning due to lymphoma from FELV we believe.

We also took on baby Mango who was sadly the only kitten of five to survive at just four weeks old due to flea anemia and momma not producing milk. Unfortunately he also has to have surgery on his right eye as his eyelid did not fully separate due to a birth defect. These are just a handful of the cats who have needed treatment over the last few weeks. We do all that we can do to try and save them, and that means racking up countless bills in the process. Each time they have to be seen, it costs, and sometimes that cost can be in the thousands, like with Binx and the full mouth extractions. That's not including day to day costs, shots and spay/neuter.

Please consider donating to help us help these precious babies who deserve to live a wonderful happy life.

All of us in the rescue community in Southwest Virginia relied on Chris Haverly.

When he wasn't on the road transporting dogs and cats to Staunton and DC, he spent every waking moment helping:

For three years, Chris spent two mornings a week helping us with our spay/neuter program. Thanks to Chris, 2,000 dogs and cats were spayed or neutered.

When eastern Kentucky had severe flooding, Chris helped us get multiple loads of donated pet food to the towns affected.

When a woman contacted us about a stray dog she had spent weeks trying to trap, I called Monica Good for advice. Chris drove five hours to pick up Monica's "Missy Trap"-- a special trap with a laser trigger.

How we wish we knew just how many animals Chris saved with that Missy Trap! He set the trap to help us rescue injured feral cats, and he spent days working with our volunteer Kacie Shuler to rescue "Highwall," a dog stuck on a ledge overlooking the highway. ACOs and rescuers from all over Southwest Virginia reached out to Chris whenever there was a tricky trapping situation.

Chris was both tireless and relentless--always ready to help whenever there was a need of any kind. People texted and called him constantly. He helped everybody.

We were incredibly fortunate to have such a hero in our midst. We'll be forever grateful.

Wise County Humane Society would like to extend a very big thank you to Norton Police Officer Osborne, Norton Police Sgt. Qualls and Norton Animal Control Officer Stallard. Thanks to their efforts last night, they helped 3 dogs at risk in the extreme cold. We are grateful for their service and the kindness they showed.

We are sharing this educational graphic that was posted on the Culpeper County Animal Shelter's page. If you see something, say something. It could help save a dog's life during these bitter cold temperatures that we are currently experiencing in our area.

Thank you 2nd Chance for Strays for the great rescue work you do in Pennsylvania. We agree there is no income in rescue. We are in a constant state of exhaustion - emotionally, physically, mentally and financially. It is outcomes like this, though, that make it all worth it.

If anyone has good before and after rescue photos that you would like to share below in the comments, we would love to see them. It's the success stories that give us the strength to keep moving forward, even when we feel too tired.
