Wise County Humane Society volunteers have been busy with numerous emergencies this spring, any help is appreciated!
From our volunteer Helen Mays:
I am currently fostering Binx and his lady love Winny, who is heavily pregnant with his kittens (they're an extremely bonded pair). Binx and Winny are two of fifteen cats and kittens rescued from living in a sewer drain in Appalachia after being tossed out carelessly by their owners to fend for themselves. Twelve have already been sent to rescue without the remaining three due to two, Camilla and Binx, needing immediate medical assistance. Unfortunately baby Camilla passed away on the operating table at just six months old due to a massive hernia. π₯²
Binx had to be rushed to the vet as he had been attacked by an animal that left deep holes in his chest, so deep my fingers literally slipped inside them as I tried to pick him up, and more wounds on his paw and neck. He had to be sedated immediately as his wounds were so extensive. After his release, he had to go back several times for more antibiotics and to have the ooze pouring out of his chest from his puncture wounds sent out to be cultured. We just received the diagnosis of a staph infection yesterday. The staph was seeping out of his wounds so extensively it felt like he took a bath in slime! I couldn't touch him without my hands and clothes getting covered in it π€’ It is also causing his hair to fall off his skin.
He was starting to heal up some, but sadly his breathing took a turn during the night last night. It was so labored he had to be rushed to the vet this morning where he was put on oxygen immediately and was hospitalized instead of getting to go on to rescue with Winny like planned. After hours of trying to figure out the best course of action for Binx and Winny, I made the decision at 3am to keep Winny, fully knowing the possibility doing so could cause more medical bills to pile up. I just couldn't bear to send her on without him. They love each other so much, are always together and she has been his comfort as he's been recovering from his wounds. She was even laying with or standing by him all morning while I watched him breathe. At one point she stood over him and he just laid his head on her pregnant belly for a full minute for comfort. Now that he's gotten sick, with possible pneumonia or cancer, still waiting on a diagnosis, I think it's best to make sure they stay together.
We also currently have two cats who need full mouth extractions, Mick and Stitch. Mick was taken from the McDonald's drive through in Wise along with his sibling who sadly passed away. Mick is an older gentleman who needs a second chance at a loving indoor life for however many years he has left. Stitch was taken from a hoarding situation and is in so much pain he cries when he eats pate, he can only lick liquid foods at the moment π’ π
My poor foster baby Kylie who was taken from the dollar store parking lot two months ago had a horrendous breathing problem to the point she slept on her vaporizer and treated it like her best friend. She was in and out of the vet's office where she sadly passed away Monday morning due to lymphoma from FELV we believe.
We also took on baby Mango who was sadly the only kitten of five to survive at just four weeks old due to flea anemia and momma not producing milk. Unfortunately he also has to have surgery on his right eye as his eyelid did not fully separate due to a birth defect. These are just a handful of the cats who have needed treatment over the last few weeks. We do all that we can do to try and save them, and that means racking up countless bills in the process. Each time they have to be seen, it costs, and sometimes that cost can be in the thousands, like with Binx and the full mouth extractions. That's not including day to day costs, shots and spay/neuter.
