Run for Sarah

Run for Sarah CPR and AEDs save lives! If your loved one collapsed in front of you...
what would you do? There was no emergency plan. Run for Sarah 5K and 1Mile

July 14, 2004, Sarah Elizabeth Friend set off to NRH20 for her junior lifeguard class, but later never came home. Just three weeks shy from turning 13 years old, Sarah collapsed at the water park and was not resuscitated. She died of cardiac arrest due to an undetected heart disease, unknown to the family, called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or enlarged heart. The water park housed 2 automatic exte

rnal defibrillators and lifeguards, but no one used the AED on Sarah. Sarah’s passing made apparent the serious need for proper training of personnel in public places and schools in order to recognize and respond to the treatment of emergencies including cardiac emergencies. When someone suffers a cardiac arrest and their heart goes into ventricular fibrillation, the only life-saving remedy is CPR and AED. We ask that you join our mission and help us by donating to the Sarah Friend Heart Foundation, sponsoring or participating in our annual fundraiser.

AEDs capture information about the victim's heart that healthcare providers need to provide post-arrest treatment. Do you know how to download data off your unit if you use it?

Different AEDs use different methods. They can use USB cables, infrared cables, USD cards, flash drives, unit specific cables, or even Wi-Fi. Contact your AED vendor and make sure you have the equipment, software, and directions needed to get event information quickly to share with the hospital care team.

I have only shared a few of Parent Heart Watch's sudden death posts in the last couple of years. I just shared their news posts of the last 30 days and it is TRAGIC! There are so many advocates out there trying to spread awareness and save lives, still the numbers multiply. Parents, Coaches, School Nurses, Athletic Trainers, Families, please have an Emergency Plan at your schools, and help the schools help you. Screen your children. Elementary and Middle Schools don't have athletic trainers. Are your coaches prepared after school hours?

As summer plays out, think about how you can be sure kids' hearts are not left on the field because of an undetected heart condition. Talk with your medical provider about making cardiac risk assessment a priority at their back-to-school checkup. https://parentheartwatch.org/aap-heart-screening-policy/
