We hope to see some of you Saturday.

Come join us for a hike this Saturday at Pisgah Marsh!

Date and time: 9:30 am, 26 Aug 2023
Location: 9939 E 350 N, North Webster, IN 46555

The handicapped-accessible boardwalk runs along a forested glacial ridge, giving a great view of the extensive wetlands south of Backwater Lake near North Webster. Many kinds of migrating waterfowl stop here. There is also a good look at a beaver dam at the end of the boardwalk.

Access is by Whitley County 850 N. From US 30 at Larwill, travel about 8 miles north on SR5 to CR 850 and turn west (there is a sign at the turn). Travel about 1⁄2 mile to the parking lot at the dead end. A spotting scope will be provided, but if you have one, it may be useful to bring along.

Since many of the natural areas we visit do not have common address points, a location guide can be used to aid in navigation. That map can be found at https://www.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/5cbd127bc148432a8c427027ccdfd4a2

You are invited to an Audubon work day at Flory-Gemmer Marsh:
Sunday, April 2, at 1:00pm

(This was originally scheduled for Sat. April 1, but due to the forecast, it has been postponed to Sunday, April 2.)

Work will entail poison hemlock removal. Bring a shovel and gloves if you have them, and wear clothing appropriate for the weather and working in a marsh.

Directions to Flory-Gemmer Marsh:
The marsh is east of Liberty Mills about a mile and a half. From SR 13, just north of North Manchester, turn east at the sign for Liberty Mills. Follow the county road through town and continue on CR 1425N (becomes 1400N) for about 1½ miles. A small, grass parking area is on the left before you get to CR 500E. For a map, go to: https://www.tippeaudubon.org/preserves

We will work to combat the spread of poison hemlock* with mechanical and chemical methods. Bring your own shovel to dig it out. If you are comfortable using chemical sprayers, a few extras will also be available.

Since many of the natural areas we visit do not have common address points, a location guide can be used to aid in navigation. That map can be found at https://www.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/5cbd127bc148432a8c427027ccdfd4a2

*poison hemlock: while it sounds dangerous, it is really most toxic when you ingest it. Please enjoy your lunch before you come to the workday so that you aren't tempted to snack on it :)

This large area contains virtually every habitat found in northeast Indiana. The river and dam area are a winter gathering site for Bald Eagles, We’ll bring a spotting scope and try for some good views.

From US 24 between Huntington and Wabash, take SR 524 south through the town of Lagro. Follow the road through several bends to the State Forest entrance. Follow the State Forest road to the Hominy Ridge picnic area. The trail down to the river is quite steep and rocky. Click here to open in Google Maps.
