Our Island Vibes BBQ Bash brought the New Horizons team together to celebrate our incredible Direct Support Professionals during National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, September 14–19!

Every day, our DSPs help individuals build independence, pursue their goals, and feel connected to their community. This celebration was a chance to pause, enjoy time together, and recognize the people behind that work.

Today, Thursday, September 17, we’re continuing DSP Recognition Week by celebrating the Direct Support Professionals who support community living at New Horizons. Their dedication helps individuals build confidence, make choices, and stay connected to their communities.

During DSP Recognition Week, September 14–19, we’re grateful for the patience, compassion, and commitment our DSPs bring to their work every day.

On Monday, September 14, we kicked off our DSP Recognition Week department spotlights by celebrating our Monarch Mobile Day Program (MMDP) and Youth Navigation Services! 💙🌺

Our Youth Navigation Services team shares how they help young people ages 16–21 build confidence and independence through travel training, employment preparation, and leadership opportunities. Through NextGen workshops, they also connect Spanish-speaking families with community resources and support.

Throughout DSP Recognition Week, September 14–19, we’re celebrating the people behind that everyday guidance and encouragement.

To the Direct Support Professionals supporting MMDP and Youth Navigation Services: thank you for helping the people we serve explore their communities, make their own choices, and take meaningful steps toward their goals.

New Horizons is spreading the word from one of our community partners, Southern California Edison (SCE), about the importance of calling 811 before starting any digging project.

Whether you’re planting a tree, installing a fence or beginning a larger construction project, underground utility lines may be closer to the surface than you think. Calling 811 at least two working days before digging allows professionals to mark buried lines and can help prevent injuries, power outages and costly repairs.

The service is free and required by California law. If you or someone you know is planning a project, remember to call before you dig.

Yesterday, we caught a LOT of smiles at New Horizons! 😄

Catch A Smile LA filled the room with laughter, music, and joy, turning the event into a whole lot of fun for our Members.

The challenge was simple: share a ball, catch a smile, and pass the joy along. Our Members were more than happy to play along!

Founded in memory of filmmaker Garry Marshall, Catch a Smile LA was co-created by father-daughter team Harvey Keenan and Felicia Shapiro to spread kindness, connection, and joy throughout the Los Angeles community.

Thank you, Catch a Smile LA, for bringing your music, energy, and so many smiles to New Horizons. Because smiles really are contagious!

New Horizons is spreading the word from one of our community partners, Southern California Edison (SCE), about a new program supporting homeowners rebuilding or repairing properties affected by the Eaton and Palisades wildfires.

Through SCE’s SWITCH program, eligible homeowners can receive incentives ranging from $100 to $2,400 toward qualifying energy-efficient upgrades, including heat pump systems, induction ranges, and smart thermostats.

Funding is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you or someone you know owns a home in one of the impacted areas, we encourage you to learn more about the program and eligibility requirements.
