I created this page to keep everyone informed about the Shawn Giles Memorial Fund (SGMF) and the work we’re doing to create safer roadways for all. I’d like to start with a brief summary of how we got here.
My husband, Shawn Giles, was a volunteer firefighter with Fuller Hose Company #1 in North East, PA. On August 20, 2023, Shawn was directing traffic at a minor motor vehicle accident at Rt. 20 and Brickyard Road when a motorist traveling at a high rate of speed drove through the active emergency scene, striking Shawn and killing him almost instantly.
Shawn’s death turned our small community upside down. It was the first line-of-duty death for Fuller Hose #1. Shawn had lifelong friends he volunteered with, and countless friends throughout the community. His loss is still felt deeply by so many.
I created the Shawn Giles Memorial Fund because I never want another family to experience what we did. Our mission is to promote awareness, education, and change so that our roadways are safer for everyone who works or finds themselves on the roadside—Fire, Police, EMS, Construction workers, Tow Truck Drivers, Good Samaritans, and any person who is exposed to moving traffic.
The SGMF began with donations given to me at the time of Shawn’s passing. Since then, we’ve continued to grow through our annual 5K in August and Bowling Bash in November. We are grateful for every person who helps keep Shawn’s legacy alive and supports our mission.
If you wish to contribute, donations can be made directly to the Shawn Giles Memorial Fund at Widget Financial.
Thank you for being here, for supporting our efforts, and for helping us work toward safer roads for all.
