Sign up to speak out against the mass surveillance initiative (Joint Operations Center) at the next North Charleston City Council meeting, Thursday, June 9th at 7PM.

We know from experience, community input, and a mountain of data that these technologies and techniques only lead to racial profiling and overpolicing of Black, Hispanic, and low-income people. We ask that you reverse course on these plans and find better ways to build trust with the community you serve.

This is also an opportunity to read our demands for and demand the translation of all public communications into Spanish language!

Please join us in opposing the City of North Charleston’s plans for domestic surveillance via a proposed “Joint Operations Center”

The city of North Charleston is planning to create a 24/7 real-time surveillance center that will monitor, in its own words, "every inch" of the city. As of April 21, 2022, the plan for the so-called Joint Operations Center will include the purchase of 745 Verkada surveillance cameras, 34 Rekor auto...

"The only way the local government knows how to solve real problems that impact real people is by throwing money at the occupying force in Black and Brown communities. 37–80 million dollars annually of Charleston County, the City of Charleston and North Charleston’s budgets go directly to law enforcement. According to the Building a Safe and Just Charleston report, police spend the majority of their resources arresting people for minor incidents which do not affect public safety, but do lead to mass criminalization and incarceration of Black, Brown and disabled people at a huge cost to taxpayers."

Beginning with taking control of the institution of policing, we must build a movement that will ultimately take back control of…

Did you know the Latin American community has deep roots in the Lowcountry reaching back to the colonial and Antebellum eras? Check out Las Voces del Lowcountry, a timeline of Latinx history in Charleston.

Latin Americans have contributed greatly to our history and quality of life in the Lowcountry. Their contributions deserve recognition and local government should provide much needed translation and interpretation services, which allows Spanish-speaking residents to be more active and engaged community members!

There is power in a chronology. The simple act of listing events with dates is a fundamental tool of historians. But it is one we often take for granted. A chronology can demonstrate change over time. It can help us understand causality and suggest connections among events, people, and ideas. A good...
