WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND WILDLIFE IN DISTRESS

Your safety comes FIRST. Never handle wildlife with bare hands, always use gloves. Adult birds and animals will protect themselves and bite or scratch when approached. Mammals behaving in an unusual manner or out during times of the day that are not normal for the species may have rabies. Do NOT attempt to capture them without first contacting a wildlif

e rehabilitator or the Massachusetts Environmental Police. Not all babies that are found need to come to a wildlife rehabilitator. If a baby appears healthy, call first for instructions. If a baby is clearly in distress, ill, or injured, place in a box with a cover that has soft material in it. Put a heating pad on low under the box. Handling by a person causes stress to wildlife. WARM, DARK, and QUIET is the key to keeping an animal stable until they can be transported to a rehabilitator. DO NOT FEED. Improper food can make an animal extremely ill.

Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s BirdCast model is predicting heavy migration through NYC over the next few nights. Please turn your lights off by 11 pm to try and mitigate collisions. And please keep an eye out for injured or dead birds, especially early in the morning, and log any you find to dbird.org. If you find an injured bird, please bring it to the Wild Bird Fund.

You can find continuously updated NYC migration forecasts from BirdCast at https://birdcast.info/migration-tools/local-migration-alerts/

Excellent guide from our friends at the wild bird fund. Please don't kidnap healthly fledglings. Even though they are alone, it is an important part of their development to live on the ground for a few days. Don't worry, they are being tended to by their parents who are nearby.

Hey friends! A bit of a different comic this week! I made this working with Bird Safe Guelph to help spread some information about birds and window collisions.

- the issue: between 16 and 42 million birds die from fatal window collisions each year in Canada

- the solution: retrofitting windows is an easy and effective solution to preventing bird deaths

- the details: markings on windows should be on the outside of windows and no more than 5cm apart to be effective

- take action: each person can save birds lives by retrofitting their windows at home

- For folks in Guelph, Ontario will be giving out free materials for transforming windows at home in the month of April, visit www.birdsafeguelph.ca for more info.

And visit Fatal Light Awareness Program Canada and Feather Friendly Bird Collision Deterrent Markers for more information on the topic!

Millions of bats live in national parks. In fact, more than 45 unique species of bats live in national parks! They pollinate, eat insects, use echolocation, and fascinate visitors. Some migrate, and some hibernate. Each species is unique, except that they're all facing threats of some type in their environments.
