Hello to everyone reading this. Please don’t judge us—this is our real story.
Ian and I were homeless for five years. When I first ended up on the street, I didn’t know where to get help. We learned to survive by working together. During most of those years, we both struggled with drugs. I used crack and speed, but I’ve now been clean for over eight months.

When I first became homeless, my 85‑year‑old step‑grandmom was with us for a year. We survived by trash‑picking for water bottles and food. I even cooked for others who lived along the bike trail. We washed our clothes in the river and later got water from a nearby graveyard. We learned how to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I met a few kind people out there—two of them are still my friends.
We avoided Code Blue shelters because people would go through our camp if we left it. Every day we worried about food, water, and making it to the next morning. I discovered I had a bad heart and had two heart attacks outside—Ian saved me both times.

This winter our tent came down on us because of the rain and the snow and the wind was real bad. It was 65-75 mph and it was -7 degrees. The tent and almost all of our things were ruined. That could have been the end. The code blue shelter would not take me because of my dog and I spent the night outside in the brutal cold. I came to the Center the next day and told them what had happened. Their team immediately went to work and made some calls. One of the calls made was to Kelly from the Ann Francis Foundation. Kelly agreed to put us up in the motel in Pottstown for a week. I did not want to go as I was afraid people would steal our things from the tent. The team at the Hospitality Center convinced me to go and gave me bus passes so I could come back to Norristown and check on my tent everyday.

Thank you for listening to our story. If it weren’t for Mike and the people he works with at the Hospitality Center, I wouldn’t be alive to share it. I hope no one ever has to go through what we did. Faith carried us through. I was homeless for five years and three weeks. This is a true story of fighting to survive every single day.

The Ann Francis Foundation placed Laura in Permanent housing and Laura now has a place of her own. Today she came to the Center to share that she was feeling low last night and went to an AA meeting and was given the keychain which read – “ 9 months Sober”. Our team at the Center works collaboratively with many agencies in the County to ensure that we work together to find real solutions for people. Laura is being supported to come up with the initial rent as she will be able to pay her own rent in the coming months.

Our superstars today came in and opened the Center for our guests. Sidney, prepared his awesome breakfast of hot grits and scrambled eggs for our guests. Staying open today meant that 40-45 people had a place to get a hot breakfast , use bathrooms , get some warm supplies like socks, gloves, hats and stay warm inside for 8 hours. Thank you Sidney, Sara and Mike for keeping the Center open today,

Calvin comes full Circle !! About 5 months ago, we shared Calvin's story . With assistance from the staff at the Hospitality Center he had just been hired at Giant. Today, he visited again to pick up his W2. He shared that he loves his job and and would like to be given some more hours. We advised him to bring us the information for his supervisor and that we would advocate for him. On his off days, he loves to visit the Center, picks up his mail and meets with the staff and just spreads joy ! We are overjoyed to see him flourishing.

Today, we had a visit from the Lower Merion Police Department who brought a 74 year old woman to us for help because "She needs a place to warm up". Unfortunately, they could not give us any additional information about her except that they found her at a Sunoco station on the Main Line, disoriented and cold. After making some enquiries, we got some identifying information from her. She did not have many belongings with her, but proudly showed us a copy of the nursing license that she earned many years ago. Our case managers helped her get comfortable and warm, and then made a call to Aging and Adult services who were here within 2 hours. They did an assessment and quickly called an ambulance to get her immediate medical care They will be following up to try to help find an emergency contact for her. Here is a picture of her walking away with the paramedics. Everyday at the Center is different, and our team is here making a difference every single day.
