Black History Month Spotlight: The West Area Computers 🚀✨

This Black History Month, we honor the brilliant women of NASA’s West Area Computing unit at Langley Research Center a segregated division where Black women mathematicians performed the complex calculations that powered America’s early aeronautics and space missions.

At a time when racial and gender barriers limited opportunity, the West Area Computers became essential to the success of supersonic flight research and the Space Race.

Among them:

• Katherine Johnson verified orbital trajectories for John Glenn’s historic flight and contributed to the Apollo moon missions.

• Dorothy Vaughan became NASA’s first Black supervisor and led her team into the era of computer programming.

• Mary Jackson became NASA’s first Black female engineer and later advocated for greater inclusion in STEM fields.

Their groundbreaking work was brought to wider public recognition through the book and film Hidden Figures, which helped ensure their contributions would no longer remain hidden.

The West Area Computing unit was important not only for its scientific achievements, but for proving that excellence thrives—even within systems designed to exclude.

Their legacy continues to inspire future generations to reach beyond barriers and toward possibility. 🚀🖤

Black History Month Spotlight | Tuskegee Airmen

Their flight was toward justice. Their mission was freedom. Swipe to see some amazing photos.

Tuskegee Airmen excellence and service challenged segregation in the U.S. military and helped pave the way for greater equity in education, aviation, and leadership. Their story is a powerful lesson in perseverance and possibility.

Trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field during World War II, these pilots, navigators, mechanics, and support crews served with distinction at a time when segregation and discrimination were embedded in the armed forces.

Despite facing systemic barriers, their mission was clear: to serve their country with excellence and to prove that skill, discipline, and leadership know no racial boundaries. Their outstanding record in combat helped dismantle racist myths and directly contributed to the eventual desegregation of the U.S. military.

The legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen extends beyond aviation—they represent courage, resilience, and the power of opportunity to change systems and open doors for future generations.

Montgomery County Together, We Keep the Dream Alive!

Honoring the Legacy, Continuing the Journey: Celebrating MLK Day in Montgomery County

We honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a visionary who taught us that change begins with courage, compassion, and community.

In Montgomery County, we stand on the shoulders of giants, committed to building a future rooted in equality, justice, and unity.

Why MLK Day Matters Here
Montgomery County is a vibrant tapestry of cultures, backgrounds, and stories. Dr. King’s dream of a “beloved community” reflects who we are and who we strive to be—a place where everyone belongs, thrives, and contributes.

Montgomery County’s Commitment
We’re dedicated to fostering a community where every voice is heard and every person has the opportunity to succeed. From community programs, education and training, we’re working hand-in-hand to turn Dr. King’s dream into our shared reality.

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: “What are you doing for others?” Dr. Martin Luther

Let this question guide us today and every day. Here’s how we can answer it together:
✅ Reflect & Educate: Read, watch, or discuss Dr. King’s teachings.
✅ Serve: Volunteer at a local food bank, shelter, or clean-up.
✅ Support: Shop at Black owned business and uplift the entrepreneurs.
✅ Advocate: Promote equity in our schools, workplaces, and community.

Share Your Story: How are you honoring Dr. King’s legacy today?

Tag us and use to inspire others with your acts of service or reflections.
