Hey, dancers, world travelers and curiosity seekers! The Virginia Beach International Folk Dancers will have our Semi-Annual "weekend away dance camp" on May 23-24, at the Airfield 4H Center in Wakefield.

This episode will be our 45th Anniversary Edition of "Going into the Woods for the Weekend!" It all started in 1981, at Makemie Woods camp in Barhamsville, and we have tried to have a (BIG) celebration every 5 years (it was every 10 years, but... time is short!)

All the details are available on this Flyer! If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

ALSO.... If you are curious about who "MAMA" is, that would be Mama Makemie, who kept us honest and watched our every move for all of these years! If you want to learn more about her past, check this out.... https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1KpcJYuRa7hsFd-ELDOd_ftWzUhBFHpEf?usp=drive_link

Many contra dances around the country have decided to stop using the terms "Ladies and Gents" and switch to gender-neutral role terms. Most urban dances have made this change, as well as several dances in Virginia. Washington DC, Charlottesville, Richmond and Williamsburg/Norge have all now gone to gender-neutral calling.

We have put together a survey to poll our dancers. If you've been to the Norfolk dance in the last few months, you know that we have done some "experimenting" with gender-neutral terms. Now we want to get a sense of how the Norfolk contra dance community feels about the issue, and whether changing how we do things makes sense or not.

We decided to allow this to be an "anonymous response" survey, so please only respond one time. We hope to share the results before the Norfolk contra dance in February. Thank you for taking the time to respond!

Virginia Beach International Folk Dance Club is back to regular
Friday night dancing at Ballet Virginia, Norfolk!

We ask for a $5.00 contribution per night. Please join us for weekly dancing starting on Fridays at Ballet Virginia, 700 W 21st St, Norfolk, VA 23517, starting at 7:30 p.m. We do easy dances with teaching for at least the first full hour, then take request.

You'll find it at the corner of 21st Street and Manteo, in Norfolk's Ghent. (It's about an 8-minute walk from the NARO Theater, if that helps). There is well-lit on-street parking (we went by there at night last weekend, to check that) as well as an Aldi store a couple of doors down with a decent size parking lot.

Hope you can join us!
