Virginia's first lightning death since 2023 was reported in Cape Charles during yesterday afternoon's storms, after two people were struck by lightning on the beach. A man went into cardiac arrest and was later pronounced dead, and a woman was also injured.
While you're squeezing in your last summertime activities, remember that lightning can strike miles away from the storm. If you can hear thunder, you’re close enough to be at risk.
⚡ Get inside a sturdy building or hard-topped vehicle.
🌳 Stay away from trees and other tall objects.
🏖️ Get out of and away from water.
🏠 Avoid open fields, beaches and exposed areas.
🔌 When possible, unplug electronics before the storm arrives.
Remember: There is no safe place outside during a thunderstorm.
When you hear thunder, go inside and stay there until 30 minutes after the last rumble.
