The Norfolk Street Choir Project Engaging the community to encourage and support our neighbors in need through service and arts. Yes, we can.”

The NSCP provides opportunities for Norfolk’s most vulnerable population to participate in the universally uplifting and encouraging practices of group singing and art-making, and is now an independent 501(c)(3) organization. The Norfolk Street Choir Project is currently open two days a week, providing hot breakfasts, showers, mail service, phone and document acquisition, creative expressive opportunities, and regular, reliable access to numerous resources like medical care, housing opportunities, and clothing through community partners. The Norfolk Street Choir meets every Tuesday, participating in rehearsals that include vocal and musical instruction that imbues participants with confidence, purpose and community investment. The Expressive Arts Program meets on Fridays, its participants working both individually and collaboratively as they explore a variety of mediums, making emotional and social connections through creative expression. The NSCP presents a variety of public performances in and around the city. For those whose economic and social standing causes them to be overlooked and disregarded, our events provide a forum where our friends can “have a voice and be seen” encouraging and inspiring one another and the community at large through music and art.

We were gifted a beautiful new doormat this week, placed at our office door by a valued partner, FSBC - Freemason Street Baptist Church. It is a simple and lovely gesture, but it also got us thinking about just how much this doorway means to our community.

Our office is the hub for a variety of services to our community. This rug is not only welcoming the staff of the NSCP, it welcomes our volunteers who come to help our community and make our clean showers, hot breakfasts, and arts opportunities possible.

It welcomes our friends who come to provide medical care, housing support, job opportunities, haircuts, clean clothes, and so much more.

But even moreso than that, this is the door that welcomes countless pieces of mail for our community.

Each one crosses the threshold, much like our own mail crosses our thresholds each day. Our friends come to this door to receive their mail and are greeted, much as we are each time we step across our own front door.

Meet Cliff, our resident gardener! 👨‍🌾

Cliff takes care of the beautiful NSCP garden plot generously shared with us by the Community Garden next door (Downtown Norfolk Community Garden). He can be found there almost every day, tending to our space and helping care for others’ spaces when needed, too.

This morning, Cliff noticed an abundance of Asian basil and started sharing it around the community. Here, he’s explaining to Rich, our Board Chair, all the different ways it can be used.

And honestly, this is the epitome of community. ❤️

The sharing of space, food, knowledge, time, and talents. 💙

When we share what we have with one another, community grows. 🌱

Fifteen members of The Norfolk Street Choir, alongside our choir director, pianist, and dedicated volunteers, traveled to Washington, D.C. after being invited to sing at the National Alliance to End Homelessness' Conference at the Washington Hilton with over 1500 attendees.

Yesterday was a beautiful day of connection. More than 100 of you came out to listen, to sing, and simply to be in community with one another. Thank you to Second Presbyterian of Norfolk for providing such an inviting space and reception after. Thank you to everyone in attendance for sharing your voices, your smiles, and your hearts. Gatherings like these remind us of the power of music to break through unseen barriers and bring people together. We can't wait to sing with you again soon!
