Give Local 757 Day: We have been busy the past few weeks with getting donated bikes to riders, giving away helmets, and running a bike rodeo for kids. However, in terms of funding, what we really need is more support for Michael Hodges and his family. They have many challenges due to the hit and run crash here in Norfolk. All money goes to the family. Thanks to all who have given, and hoping more can support the need! https://www.gofundme.com/manage/fundraiser-for-michael-hodges-family/fundraiser

Councilman Jeremy McGee will be at the Expo tonight to kick off Bike Month! He is reading the bike month proclaimation at 5pm at Slover Library downtown for the Expo 5-7pm. Bike Norfolk will be there, and I have several new adult helmets for free, along with some other free items. I will only have a couple kids helmets with me, but as always, if you know a youth who needs a helmet, we can get one to you. There will be other bicycling and bike adjacent orgs there, and Melvin Tendilla is leading a ride at the end of the event! See you there.

Michael Hodges, aged 58, is a long-time bicycle commuter in Norfolk, VA. On March 3, 2026, Michael was riding on Tidewater Drive to visit his mother. He was struck by an automobile, and the driver left the scene, leaving Michael in critical condition in the road. He was rushed to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he was diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury and placed on a ventilator. Though progress has been made—he opens his eyes, and he has been squeezing hands—Michael remains on a ventilator as of April 2. He was transported to a rehabiliation facility in Roanoke, VA, on April 1.

Michael’s daughter, Mytika, needs our support. There are bills coming due, and she will now need to travel over 250 miles to visit him. In addition to her duties as mother to 3 children, she has taken on duties to care for Michael’s mother who has health challenges. Mytika is encouraged by her father’s progress, and she knows that it is a long road ahead.

100% of funds collected will go directly to Mytika from Bike Norfolk, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Michael has been a valued employee of Paramount Sleep, a local family owned business, for 15 years. His job title: box spring upholsterer. The bicycle has always been his primary transportation to work. We at Bike Norfolk understand the joys and challenges of daily commuting. As of April 2, the Norfolk Police have not made an arrest of the hit-and-run driver. Anyone who has information about the incident, please call the Norfolk Police (number at this link) or to report anonymously, 1-800-LOCK-U-UP.

We will update this page when we have information to share about Michael’s progress.

Thank you for supporting Michael and his family!

Join Bike Norfolk for our quarterly maintenance of mountain bike trails at Northside park. We clear brush, lay mulch, pick up litter, and fix/ replace signage. Please bring gloves and wear closed toe shoes and insect repellent. Ticks are probably already out (or never left) so prepare accordingly. We ride a couple of loops at the end if you want to bring your mountain bike (and helmet!). Lunch provided for all participants at 11:00.

**Meet at the main trailhead which is at the back of the park by the ballfields/ back parking lot.
