Congratulations City of Norfolk DOT for receiving a VDOT Locality Project Award for the Granby Street bike lanes! We all experience the impact of this great project. I noticed there are now temporary counters on the lanes, so it will be great to see the numbers as well. I'm honored to annouce the official roll out of the Victim and Family Resources program. Thanks to your donations and support from REI, we have had an active fund since 2024 that offers nominal support to victims and their families should a rider or other active transportation user get hurt or killed in a crash or collision. The fund allows us to donate to help with expenses, and in some cases, we have run the fundraiser ourselves.

This year, Bike Norfolk partnered with attorney and bicycle rider Gregory Sandler of Kalfus and Nachman. Gregory produced a document that details how to proceed prior to incidents, what to do during an incident, and how to best prepare throughout. I suggest you read the information in advance to be best prepared should you or someone you love be involved in a collision.

Those who have contributed their time to this setting up this program are Iesha Shipp Senn, Harold Bell, and web designers Tami Cole and Thomas Conner.

Next up, we will investigate and build a resource for things like what to do in cases of near misses, getting buzzed, having objects thrown our way, and other potentially dangerous encounters we have on the roads that don't result in injury in the present.

Project Launch! Bike Streets has rolled out the start to the "Low Stress" Bike Map in Norfolk. This map will be developed by US, the community of riders. The idea is to download the app and log rides to help build the Low-Stress Norfolk Bike Map. Ride and help reach the first weekly goal of 20 riders. bikestreets.com/join

Access to the app and website are free to all users. There is a bit of learning curve to using the tools, so jump on and start mapping or drawing in the info. The streets that are not low stress (to a casual rider, think rider with a kid) need to be shown as such, and notes made. For example, on the 20 mile ride I did yesterday, the 1 mile section on Tidewater Drive I used would be noted as one where sidwalk use is recommended.

Bike Norfolk will be working with Bike Streets to refine the map once we get more data in it (let me know if you want to be involved with helping). The info will also help us show the city where the gaps are in the low stress network so as to give the planners more data points. Avi Stopper with Bike Streets explained to me that the big difference in this tool for riders compared with using the Google tool for bike navigation is that local knowledge is the foundation of the network.

We are postponing tody's Ribbon Cutting-Bike Ride out of respect for the victims in an early morning automobile crash on Granby Street. Please stay tuned for a future rescheduled date.

Please join us Friday at Granby High, 11am-12noon, for the ribbon cutting/ bike ride celebrating the Granby bike lanes and pedestrian improvements. Arrive early--we have about 40 water bottles from our local bike shops/ running shop for the first to arrive. We also have some sticker packs/water bottles for kids. This is a HUGE day--we have 8 confirmed elected officials coming (city council members and state legislators) and this is our opportunity to ride shoulder to shoulder along side them, thank them, and tell them we want more improvements. Please read the info on the event page about where to park if you are driving.

Take a look at this Sept 12, 1968 image of bike riders in front of Granby High in the exact location where our ribbon cutting is taking place. It includes local legends such as Ben Potts (4th bike from right) who owned Colley Ave Bike Shop, and Gerald and Peter Teeuwen (2nd and 6th) who brought competitive cycling from the Netherlands to Hampton Roads.
