May the Fourth be with you… Cub Scouts is accepting of droids, Jawas, Sand People, Twi’leks, and anyone else you may find at a space hub.
During our citizenship adventure this year we explored how to build our crew, map the history of our country, and much more.
Want to play Battle for the Galaxy to remember why rules are important and what makes a good squadron?
The guide is below.
Objective
X-Wing pilots and TIE Fighter pilots are battling for control of the skies!
Each side must flip as many “ships” (cups) to their team’s direction before the timer runs out. Have two adults run the station. Both will referee but after each battle one will guide the discussion while the other scores the cups and resets
🛰 Setup
Divide the group into two teams:
X-Wings (Rebels) → try to flip cups right side up.
TIE Fighters (Empire) → try to flip cups upside down.
Spread plastic cups evenly across a table or gym floor, with about half facing up and half down to start.
Set a timer for 60 seconds (or longer for big groups).
⚔️ How to Play
When the signal sounds (“Engage Hyperdrive!”), both teams race to flip as many cups as they can to their side’s position.
X-Wings: flip cups so they stand upright (ready to take off)
TIE Fighters: flip cups upside down (stealth mode).
Players can only use one hand — pilots need precision!
No pushing, shoving, or guarding cups — pilots focus on flying, not fighting.
When the timer ends (“Cease fire!”), everyone returns to base (the table)
Count how many cups are up and how many are down.More cups upright = X-Wing victory.
More cups upside down = TIE Fighter victory.
🌟 Post-Game Discussion #1: Why Rules Matter
Prompt: “Why do you think we need rules in our flight battle?”
Help kids discover ideas like:
Rules make the battle fair so everyone has fun.
They keep the game safe, just like pilots follow flight instructions.
Rules help everyone understand their mission and work together instead of arguing.
Without rules, chaos in the galaxy — or in the gym — would happen!
Play a second time, switch up teams if their scores were not close. If their scores were, just switch who is TIE fighter pilot and who is an X wing pilot
🤝 Post-Game Discussion #2: Teamwork in the Galaxy
Prompt: “What does it mean to be part of a good flight squadron?”
Guide them toward:
A good teammate encourages others and keeps spirits high.
They work together, not just for themselves.
They stay calm under pressure and focus on their mission.
Everyone’s role matters — pilots, mechanics, even droids — just like every player in the game helped their team.
💫 Wrap-Up Message:
“Just like the pilots of the Rebel Alliance and the Imperial Fleet, you learned how teamwork, fairness, and following the rules keep your squadron strong. May the Force — and good sportsmanship — be with you!”
