Juneteenth (June 19) commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. This signaled the true end of slavery for the last 250,000 enslaved Black Americans in the U.S., an agonizing two and a half years after President Lincoln’s decree.

Beyond a mere historical timestamp, Juneteenth carries a profound, multi-layered meaning:

• America’s Second Independence Day: It represents the day the lofty ideals of the Declaration of Independence—that "all men are created equal"—were truly applied to Black Americans.

Today, it serves as a powerful reflection on both the triumphs and the unresolved hurdles in America's journey toward racial equality.
