The Art of Response: Ekphrastic Writing
Thursday, November 12th
1:00-3:00 pm

LOCATION:
Michener Art Museum
138 S. Pine Street
Doylestown, PA 18901

This 2-hour session program will focus on:
Abstractions of Nature: Quarries and Industry in Pennsylvania Impressionism.

We will begin in the galleries with a brief presentation by a Michener docent offering insight into the artist and their work. From there, workshop leaders from the Volta Center for Writing Arts will guide participants through a generative writing experience.

Writers of all levels and in any genre are welcome and encouraged to join.

$10 for Michener Museum members
$22 for non-members (which includes admission to museum for the day)

"Finding Beauty in the Textures of Life”

This collage & writing workshop will be led by the accomplished and charismatic artist, Justin Bursk.

This event will be held at the Volta Center for Writing Arts, located in the Bucks County Community College Library, Newtown Campus, 275 Swamp Road, Newtown, Pennsylvania 18940

This generative workshop will explore the beauty and serendipity found in everyday encounters. All levels of experience are encouraged and welcomed!

Fee for this workshop: $15
Students, Seniors & Veterans: $10

The talented and enigmatic Justin Bursk will be offering a workshop at Volta: Center for Writing Arts on Wednesday, October 21st at 4:00 pm.

This collage and writing experience will engage partipants with their environment through the art of texture rubbing. By capturing the intricate patterns and surfaces we often overlook, participants will create a tactile library of textures.

"Justin Bursk works and plays in his hometown with the help of his wife, kids, and his students. His work has been shown nationally including at The Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, The Texas Firehouse (NY, NY); Wheaton Arts (Glassboro, NJ) and Mount Airy Contemporary, (Philadelphia). He received his BFA in painting and his Art Ed Certification from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia and his MFA in painting from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. He has been teaching art in the public schools for 26 years. While Justin's degrees are in painting he makes many things. In 2003 his working process was described as "a builder of meaning who might help make sense of the cruelty and oppressive elements of life through sharing and playing” (catalogue for Hubris at The Hyde park Art Center, Chicago curated by The Pond). His goal is to create opportunities for persuasion where the viewer, as well as the artist, can find that space in between action and observation, where change is not only possible but looming. The strategies he employs rely on experimentation and failure, they are that moment we choose to not only look but to see."

This workshop offers a unique opportunity for participants to engage deeply with their environment through the art of texture rubbing. By capturing the intricate patterns and surfaces we often overlook, participants will create a tactile library of textures. These resources will serve as the foundation for a collage, reflecting the beauty and serendipity found in everyday encounters. As the session progresses, the discussion will delve into how these accidental discoveries and aesthetic experiences shape our perception of beauty. Participants will then be encouraged to transfer these insights into their writing, using the technique of texture rubbing as a metaphor for exploring layers of meaning and detail in their work. The workshop will culminate in a brief share-out session, where attendees can present their creations and insights, fostering an environment of collective learning and inspiration.

Camille Norvaisas is inspired by the Frederick Buechner quote, "Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid." Camille is drawn to images, interactions, memories, and snippets of history that can be beautiful or terrible. And when truly aware, exploring the beauty in the terrifying—the glow and the ache. Her works have been published in many journals and her first book, Rare as the Kotuku, and her forthcoming book (2027), What Matters, are both through Aldrich Press.

Grab the final spot in this unique and engaging workshop with the talented RG Evans this Tuesday, September 22nd, 3:30-5:30 pm.

Discover the craft of songwriting in a relaxed, welcoming workshop for all experience levels, from beginner to balladeer. Through creative exercises and practical techniques, participants will explore lyric writing, melody, and storytelling while developing songs in a supportive, collaborative environment.

Acoustic Instruments welcome but not required.
