Meet the local musicians joining the Morphing String Quartet for the Musical Pathways Fellowship!

Buse Ak, Sevcan Aran, Feyzullah Göncü, and Neris Özen will take part in workshops and rehearsals with the quartet in Şanlıurfa, culminating in a public concert. Sevcan, the project manager, is bringing this group of talented musicians together and the project to life!

We recently announced the Musical Pathways Fellowship, and now we’re introducing the quartet: the Morphing String Quartet (Morphing Chamber Orchestra)!

Jan Lomozik (cello), Julia Turnovsky (violin), Tomasz Wabnic (viola), and Yuuki Wong (violin) will travel to Şanlıurfa in southeastern Türkiye. Over four days, they’ll bring their expertise in classical music to workshops with the region’s traditional musicians, concluding in a public concert.

What if we reach back farther than Dvořák, Stravinsky and Bartók, who each drew on their own heritage, to the place where our shared heritage began?

To explore this question, the Abraham Path Initiative announces the Musical Pathways Fellowship, a pilot program bringing string quartets and composers to Şanlıurfa in southeastern Türkiye to work alongside the region's traditional musicians, in search of understanding and inspiration in some of humanity's oldest shared traditions.

Over four days, the program moves from collaboration to performance:
🎻 Workshops and rehearsals with classical and local traditional musicians
🏛️ A visit to the Şanlıurfa Archaeology and Mosaic Museum
💃 A dinner with traditional music and dance in Kısas
⛰️ A guided tour of Göbekli Tepe
🎶 A public concert to close the program

What happens after the training? The fieldwork.

Over the next three months, our Mesopotamia Oral History Project fellows will be collecting oral histories from their communities. They'll record both long and short stories and interviews, focusing on indigenous knowledge, folklore, songs, nursery rhymes, and the many languages spoken across the region. Some fellows are just getting started, others are further along.

In 2027, we'll publish the material on our website. Stay tuned for updates throughout the fall!

On August 7-9, 2026, Dr. Hannah Stork joined Diyara Demir and Hillary Davis of Heritage of War and Peace for a three-day oral history training in Şanlıurfa, Türkiye with four local Fellows.

Over the course of the training, API Fellows covered:
💠The purposes and theories behind oral history,
💠Ethical considerations.
💠Interview techniques and best practices, and
💠Data storage protocols.

They then applied what they learned in a practice interview with a local business owner.

The cohort brings a range of expertise: İzzet Aran, a photographer, historian, and longtime friend of API; his son Umut; Nubıhar Taş, an architect; and İbrahim Halil Küneş, a Byzantine historian.

Today, we're honored to share our partnership with Heritage of War and Peace as part of the Mesopotamia Oral History Project!

Heritage of War and Peace is an association with the primary goal of helping communities reclaim their pasts. With experience in sensitive contexts and across different geographies and languages, they bridge insights from academic research and practical interventions with on-the-ground applications. Awareness of multilayered settings and high ethical standards and integrity form the basis of their work, reclaiming the past to protect a better tomorrow.

Heritage of War and Peace team members Diyara Demir and Hillary Davis led the training of our Fellows in Urfa earlier this summer, playing an integral role in the collection process and making sure the Fellows were fully prepared to embark on their fieldwork.

We're thrilled to introduce the Mesopotamia Oral History Project team, starting with our project lead, API Senior Fellow Dr. Hannah Stork!

Dr. Stork holds a PhD from Yale University, specializing in religions of the late ancient Near East and Syriac Studies. Her research focuses on premodern perceptions of language change and multilingualism, as well as the role of language in the construction of religious identity.

Prior to her graduate studies, Hannah worked for API in the Middle East for a number of years, exploring the trails, landscapes, and cultural heritage of the region and its people. She received the 2024 API John Anthony Farkas Jr. Junior Fellowship and led an educational travel course for 16 scholars through southeastern Turkey.

We're so excited to have her as a Fellow in 2026 and can't wait to share snippets from the training session in the coming weeks.

🗺️ Introducing the Mesopotamia Oral History Project 🗺️

Across the lands that make up Mesopotamia, an irreplaceable archive is vanishing: languages, dialects, and the stories that carry generations of knowledge about weather, plants, farming, medicine, and folklore.

Conflict, climate change, and migration are accelerating the loss. We may have only a few years left to capture this knowledge from the last generation who lived it before the Information Age changed everything.

The Mesopotamia Oral History Project, led by Senior Fellow Dr. Hannah Stork, features a team of local storytellers recruited from communities along the Path. Fellows will walk the trails, working to build a first-person "library of disappearing things" in their own words and their own languages. Collection is now underway!

The project unfolds in three phases:
📍 Phase One: Ibrahim Yolu corridor, near Şanlıurfa, Türkiye
📍 Phase Two: Tur Abdin region to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq border
📍 Phase Three: The full Zagros Mountain Trail, Kurdistan Region of Iraq
