Kitten Associates is an award-winning, non-profit, home-foster based, cat rescue dedicated to the welfare of homeless cats and kittens. Founded in July 2010 by Robin AF Olson and Samuel Moore

Our mission:

Focusing on the large un-homed cat population, we rescue and place in our foster care network, as many cats and kittens from High-Kill Shelters as possible, to spare them from being euthanized.

This not only makes room for more animals at each shelter; it also reduces the stress on animal care workers who would have been charged to euthanize these cats. In addition, each foster cat or kitten in our program is available for adoption to carefully screened applicants to ensure these animals are never at risk for being in a shelter again. While adoptions are key part of our strategy, reduction of pet overpopulation, consulting on cat behavior issues and educating about species appropriate nutrition is the other side of the coin. There simply are not enough homes for all the un-homed cats and in the United States. In order to reduce euthanasia rates, we must act to curb overpopulation. Often, legislation is needed to enforce sustainable spay/neuter policies. We provide support for these policies and encourage legislative initiatives that help solve this worldwide problem: position papers, fund drives, polling, direct mail and email communications, case studies, etc. Kitten Associates is a non-profit animal rescue, 100% volunteer run with a network of foster homes. We rely on donations from the general public in order to support our rescue program efforts. To date we have helped save over 500 lives. AWARDS:

Dear Friends, Two nights ago I got a call from my neighbor. He discovered a badly injured opossum and needed help. Though our focus is on caring for cats, I jumped into action and within a few hours was lucky enough to find the one person who specializes in critical care for opossums. She named him, Johnny Boy, and has been at his side ever since. Johnny is not stable yet, but he's eating, got fluid therapy, and his wounds are dressed. I'll be going to see him this afternoon. I'll bring a donation of food and supplies since Johnny can have cat food! It's $5 Friday and this week I'd like to honor Stephanie's good work by asking all of you to consider lending a helping paw for a much-deserving rescue-friend.

Dear Friends, Twelve years ago we took a heavily pregnant cat named Mia into our rescue. Mia was at an apartment complex, living outside. The management threatened to poison her rather than get her help. Thankfully, our friend Warren trapped her and our amazing foster mom, Maria, cared for Mia and her 5 kittens until they were ready to travel to Connecticut to find their forever homes.

Mia was not well-socialized. We could not handle her. We tried fo find an adopter, but in the end she became our girl.

She slept with me every night. She was an incredible surrogate mom to our hundreds of foster kittens over the years. Mia was quiet but came out of her shell enough to play, "yodel" while holding a mousey toy in her mouth, and even let me sneak in a pet once in a while before she ran off. I loved Mia from afar. That's how things worked with us.

Two and a half years ago, Mia got lung cancer. We did surgery to remove the lung lobe and she recovered well. But the cancer came back a few months later in another lung lobe. Mia had been doing well, living a wonderful life, until I realized she had mouth pain and her beautiful grey fur was getting badly matted. The problem was, we couldn't take care of those issues because today Mia was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and was considered high-risk to be sedated. There is more, but the bottom line is that after careful consideration and discussion with a few of our vets, we decided that Mia was in too much pain and we couldn't treat any of it, and that it was cruel to let her continue on this way.

Mia passed peacefully this afternoon, surrounded by love. It was a beautiful sendoff. I finally got to kiss and pet her, though it was to say farewell. I will miss this sweet girl so very much. Fly Free MiMi. xoxo

Dear Friends, After two weeks of radiation, three ER hospitalizations, and a price tag we never envisioned, Hamlet is finally starting to feel better. This sweet boy still loves everyone he meets and we couldn’t be more delighted! Please congratulate Hammie on graduation from cancer treatment!

Dear Friends,
We're struggling to cover the costs of Hamlet's cancer treatment. Last week Hamlet had an infection, high-fever, and stopped eating. We had to divert resources to get him hospitalized so he could be strong enough to continue radiation. Now we're in a pickle with funds. I hope you can lend a helping paw because this is a very special foster kitty.

Dear Friends,

Meet Hamlet. He’s a sleek house-panther with a Siamese soul. The second you hear him meow, it’ll be obvious—and he loves to “chat.” Hammie is sweet, affectionate, and friendly…and has nasal lymphoma. He also doesn’t have a forever home.

Here’s the good news. Our rescue partner, Joan, who runs Friends of Greybeard, Inc. in Tennessee, is caring for Hamlet. She reached out to us for help. While we couldn’t physically bring Hammie to our foster home in Connecticut, we could help by providing grants for testing and treatment of his cancer.

The treatment is very expensive, but it’s possible with radiation that Hamlet will get 1.5 to 2.5 years of a great quality of life. There are rare cases, fingers crossed, where this treatment is curative! Hamlet deserves a chance, and maybe, along the way, we’ll find him a forever home, too.

Black cats in the south have a much tougher time finding a home or help. That’s just another reason why we’ve stepped in.

We hope you’ll join us in following Hamlet’s cancer-treatment journey, starting today.

Hamlet is with Joan at the oncology vet. He’ll be getting a second CT scan. This will show us if the cancer has spread, if it responded to an injection of Elspar (done to help relieve the tumor from pushing on Hamlet’s right eye), and it will pinpoint exactly where the radiation will be focused so that it can be the most effective on destroying the tumor.

Branford, Connecticut, friends, and those in the surrounding area: our friends at the Branford Compassion Club are looking for a very special foster home for a very special Kitty. Can you help? https://www.facebook.com/share/p/17xgV5m2R5/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Scotch update: we’ve spoken with a couple of families who ultimately can’t foster Scotch. We feel discouraged but know that is family is out there. If you live within 30 min of Branford CT and are able to give a very sweet kitten seizure medication - we’d love to chat. Scotch is good with children, dogs, and cats. He is very sweet. He currently takes Keppra 3x a day and phenobartbital 2x a day. He takes both as liquid and takes it well. We are working on weaning him off Keppra and sticking to just meds twice a day for the indefinite future. We know we may not find his forever family at this time, but are now looking for a foster family who is comfortable with meds. Please message us or comment if you are seriously considering being able to assist. We are losing hope - please share!
