Ambassador John L. Loeb Jr. devoted much of his later life to advancing understanding of America’s foundational commitment to religious freedom and combating anti-Semitism.
In 2009, he funded the construction of the Ambassador John L. Loeb Jr. Visitors Center at Touro Synagogue National Historic Site in Newport, Rhode Island. The Loeb Visitors Center’s interpretive theme was inspired by George Washington’s historic 1790 letter to the Hebrew Congregation of Newport. Washington wrote in response to a message of welcome sent by Moses Seixas, president of the congregation—and an ancestor of Ambassador Loeb.
Washington’s words remain as meaningful today as they were more than two centuries ago: the government of the United States “gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.”

On August 16, 150 people, including federal, state, and local officials, gathered at Newport’s historic Colony House for the 79th annual reading of George Washington’s 1790 Letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport.

The keynote address was delivered by Rachel Laser, President and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, who reflected on the continuing importance — and, in her view, increasing urgency — of protecting religious liberty and the separation of church and state.
