The GFWC Newport Woman’s Club has been an active force in the town of Newport since 1922. We are members of the Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, which is an international women’s organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. Women’s Club members work in their own communities to support the a

rts, preserve natural resources, advance education, promote healthy lifestyles, encourage civic involvement, and work toward world peace and understanding. Past projects for our local club include the purchase of land for the Newport Public Library in the 1950’s and the impetus for the clean-up of Lake Sebasticook and the River Walk located in Newport on the banks of the Sebasticook River outlet. The GFWC Newport Woman’s Club continues to be the support of numerous community projects including an annual scholarship to a Nokomis graduating senior and the “Woman to Child” program, which gives each child registering into the Newport/Plymouth school system a “Learning Kit” of school supplies. Our support of the local Girl Scouts, community seniors, and other programs such as the Maine Youth Leadership program, which trains our future leaders, continue to be our focus.

From the national GFWC Newsletter:

One hundred and thirty-six years ago, on April 24th, 1890, 63 women from 17 states across the country formally adopted the constitution of the newly-formed General Federation of Women’s Clubs. Their commitment to each other paved the way for the immeasurable impact clubwomen have had on the world.

Today, let's take a moment to remember the legacy of those who founded our organization.

Our April GFWC Newport Woman's Club meeting was Thursday, April 9th. Celebrating our club motto of Intellectual Advancement, we went on a field trip to the Bangor Public Library (145 Harlow Street in Bangor).
We met at the Bangor Public Library for a 11am tour of their facility and then our club meeting. The tour was amazing!! Thank you to our guide, Shavaun, and the Research Librarians for the incredible display of GFWC Maine historical items. After the meeting, we went out for lunch at Olive Garden.
