Our love language is curating an intentional space with native plants. 💗

This area originally had non-native, ornamental plants and a few native species. Unfortunately, invasive orange daylilies were encroaching upon them all! Our client wanted to transform the space into a garden that hosts a variety of native plants, with accessible and organized beds!

Site prep was extensive for this project as the existing native plants were excavated and transplanted to new locations in the garden. Logs were brought in to form the distinct borders of the beds. The garden entrance features an arbor and Feather and Fern added on a custom, handmade gate to it! Lastly, a fence was installed around the entire plot to protect the new plants from all the neighborhood rabbits! The client can remove the fence once the plants are established!

Overall, more than 90 new plants were planted representing 23 species! 🌿🌼

Feather and Fern designed this garden to be a diverse, unique area for the client to enjoy!

Do you ever blink and your plants have doubled, tripled, or quadrupled in size? 😅🌿

Shelby’s wild bleeding hearts (Dicentra eximia) have grown incredibly quickly in just one year! When she planted them last summer, these had just a few stems and reached only six inches from the ground. Now they stand over a foot tall and are three feet wide! (Hori hori knife for scale)

Letting the plants do their thing is a big part of native gardening and the results can be amazing!

Happy PA Native Species Day! 🌸🐢🦋🌳🦉🐍🦇

We may be a little biased, but we think Pennsylvania has the coolest, most beautiful diversity of living things! Today, we celebrate all the native plants, animals, fungi, and microbes that form the delicate balance of our ecosystems here.

Be sure to get outside today and find a native species to celebrate! 🥳

Unique plants for unique spaces! 🌿

Drooping leucothoe (Leucothoe fontanesiana) is one of our favorite shrubs. This native is an evergreen, and in the winter its leaves may change to a gorgeous burgundy color. In the spring, white, bell-shaped flowers bloom like a waterfall down the cascading branches.

It’s so fun to find and plant species for our clients that aren’t too common in a home garden!

The Appalachian region of Pennsylvania is home to the most special plants! 💗

Wild bleeding heart (Dicentra eximia) is a state endangered wildflower that adds a meaningful connection to central PA gardens.

Native plants bring endless opportunities to feel closer to nature and your local landscapes.

Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking!! 🌼🌿

Miranda Priestly may not be inspired by florals for spring in the fashion world, but in the gardening world it’s a whole different story! This property was a 2025 project which included some beautiful spring blooms like golden ragwort (Packera aurea). Watching a backyard transform into a thriving native plant garden really is amazing!

Landscaping your property with native plants offers countless benefits for other life to thrive. From rich nectar, natural cover, and various food sources, native plants sustain wildlife from insects to birds to mammals and more!

When you plant native, you’re supporting the ecosystem around you and that is groundbreaking!

Happy Earth Day! 🌼🌿🍄

We celebrated by visiting a local native plant nursery! So many beautiful plants are ready for their new homes. Plus, a Virginia bluebell (Mertensia virginica) and Jacob’s ladder (Polemonium reptans) growing wild amidst the nursery tables!

Where else would we want to be? 🤗

Fall projects are coming to life! 🌿

This hillside lawn was converted to a native garden bed in the early fall of 2025. Now, we get to see all the plugs and seeds growing strong in their first spring season!

The long-beaked sedges (Carex sprengelii) we installed last fall are coming back doubled in size! This species is one of our favorite sedges, with long, arching foliage that adds a graceful touch to any garden!

We’re excited to watch this hillside flourish! 🌼

It’s our favorite season…bluebell season!! 🩵

Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) are a delightful native wildflower to add to your garden for an early spring bloom!

Bluebells prefer moist, rich soil that is well-drained. As a woodland wildflower, they like to be planted in a spot that receives sun in the early spring, but shade in the summer as trees canopies fill in.

Who wouldn’t want a patch of Virginia bluebells thriving in their garden?

This time of year, we are either in our gardens working or thinking about being in our gardens working! 🌱🪏

Everyday, more leaves are uncurling and more flowers are blooming! Spring ephemerals are a special group of plants that bloom for a short period during the start of the season. They emerge and bloom quickly before trees have leafed out. Then, their foliage dies back and they enter dormancy by the summertime.

We’ve seen an assortment of blooms so far:
🌿 Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)
🌿 Round-lobed hepatica (Hepatica americana)
🌿 Dutchman’s breeches (Dicentra cucullaria)

Spring ephemerals are a delight to see after a long winter!
