The final five items on the list of warning signs of an abusive relationship-

*verbal abuse: criticizes you or says blatantly cruel, hurtful things; degrades, curses, calls you ugly names. This may also involve sleep deprivation, waking you up with relentless verbal abuse.

*rigid s*x rules: expects you to serve, obey and remain at home. Doesn't see you as his equal, nor respects you. He expects you to ask permission but feels he doesn't need your approval for anything.

*sudden mood swings: switches from sweetly loving to explosively violent in a matter of minutes or even more confusing, within seconds

*past battering: admits to hitting women in the past, but says that they made him do it, or the situation brought it on

*threats of violence: makes statements like, "if I can't have you, no one will," or "I could kill you", then dismisses them with "everybody talks that way", or "I didn't really mean it." If he has come this far, it is time to get help, or get out!

More from the list of warning signs of an abusive relationship-
*Blames others for problems or mistakes-it is always someone else's fault for his/her behavior or if anything goes wrong
*Makes everyone else responsible for their feelings-may say things like "You make me angry" or "you're hurting me by not doing what I tell you"
*hypersensitive-is easily insulted, rants about things that are just a part of life
*cruelty to animals and children-kills or punishes animals harshly, may expect children to do things that are far beyond their ability
*forced s*xual acts-won't stop when told "no", makes you do s*xual acts you aren't comfortable with, enjoys violent s*x

If these actions are present in your relationship, be aware they could signal abusive behavior.

There are several warning signs of an abusive relationship-below is a partial list of those signs:
*a push for quick involvement-the person comes on very strong and may pressure for an exclusive commitment almost immediately
*jealousy-excessively possessive; calls or texts constantly, visits unexpectedly, accuses his victim of cheating on him
*controlling-controls what you do, who you see, controls finances, questions you intensely
*unrealistic expectations-expects you to be the perfect woman and meet his every need, expects you to do more than you are able to
*isolation-tries to cut you off from family and friends; accuses people who are your supporters of "causing trouble"

Be aware of these troubling signs and perhaps reconsider your involvement with the person exhibiting these signs. We will look at more of these warning signs in a future post.

The last two types of abuse we will look at are property abuse and animal abuse.
Property abuse involves punching doors or walls, slamming doors, sabotaging vehicles, kicking furniture, throwing objects, hiding things and going through phones.
Animal abuse is a method abusers use to affect their victims adversely through abusing their pets. This can be done by kicking the dog, harming or killing the animal, threatening to get rid of a pet, neglect and giving the pet more attention than the partner.

Remember abuse takes several forms, and all are attempts to control and maintain power over another person.

Today we are looking at the topic of spiritual abuse. Spiritual abuse is seldom recognized or acknowledged, but to a victim is very real. It can involve tactics such as misusing scripture or God to control a victim’s actions, keeping the victim from attending church or possibly making the victim attend church where or when they don’t want to. This can also include demanding that the victim dress a certain way, again using scripture to enforce it. Like all types of abuse, it is all about control.

One of the types of abuse is Verbal Abuse. Verbal abuse can consist of name calling, shouting, swearing, threats, abusive jokes, the silent treatment, controlling conversations and other ways of controlling or dominating the victim. If you recognize yourself using these tactics or they are being used against you, seek help from those trained in domestic abuse recovery.
