Rain couldn’t keep Newport away! A packed house joined us at Newport Craft for a free performance by the Toomai String Quintet as part of the Community Concerts Series. Our audience was treated to music and stories from Brazil, Spain, Cuba, and Mexico, including a Rhode Island Premiere! Thank you, Toomai Quintet, for bringing such an engaging program to Newport, and giving us the perfect reason to spend a rainy afternoon together. 💙🎻☔️

🎶: Fantasie über Themen aus Mozart’s Figaro und Don Giovanni, S. 697

When composer Franz Liszt passed away, this piece remained an unfinished mystery. Over a century later, it was reconstructed into the extraordinary work we know and love today. Thank you to Zijian Wei for bringing that magic to life! 🎹 ✨

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we learn of the tragic passing of composer, cellist, and friend Cris Derksen.

Last year, we had the honor of commissioning a work from Cris as part of our annual commissioning initiative, where Galvin Cello Quartet premiered her piece ‘First Light’, a reimagining of the story of a runaway enslaved boy named John Anthony in 1771.

In her program note, Cris wrote:

“I’m an Indigenous cellist and composer from Canada; I’m originally from Treaty 8 in Northern Alberta. I always come to my work with an Indigenous lens as it is my perspective. Learning about Rhode Island was quite the trip, so many harsh realities of colonization, war over land, and racism…

When researching, I found The Wampanoag are a Native American people known as the ‘People of the First Light’ who have lived in Rhode Island from time immemorial. What a beautiful concept, the people of the first light. So comes ‘First Light’… What if John Anthony managed to escape and leave behind a life that was not his and create his own life, reclaim his own light?”

We will always remember Cris for her unwavering commitment to highlighting untold stories and histories through music. It was a true privilege to work with her, learn from her, and to share her work with our audiences.

Our hearts are with her family, friends, collaborators, and all those impacted by her work. You can find the full recording of ‘First Light’, and learn more about her with the link in our bio.
