ODFW Assistant District Wildlife Biologist, Skyler Gerrity, has reached out to see if the Lincoln County Chapter of Oregon Hunters Association would be interested in a habitat improvement field day at their Elkhorn Meadow Project (44.49055, -123.99146). ODFW and their partners, United States Forest Service, created the meadow back in 2019 to provide important habitat for elk, deer, black bear, and other wildlife species.
If interested, ODFW welcomes help pulling noxious plants (thistle, foxglove, tansy, etc), moving downed trees out of the meadow, and cutting back brush that is overtaking the grass. They expect the work will only take a couple of hours and we would not be able to start until at least 9 am (marbled murrelet restrictions).
Volunteers will need work gloves, snacks, and water. They are also welcome to bring hedge shears, hedge trimmers, or w**d whackers, but ODFW will have some of these tools. Ideally, the work would take place within the next month. The 18th of May is the estimated work day, but is up for discussion. Link to sign up in the comments.
Assistant District Wildlife Biologist, Skyler Gerrity will be at our next meeting and will give a presentation about the upcoming habitat project and also ODFW updates on research and management plans. He will also answer questions about controlled hunt applications.
