Dad's legacy is about bringing joy to others and giving back. With that between October and December we're always his favorite, especially Christmas. We want to share more on his love for the season
🎄Carrying the Light: A Daughter Honoring her Father’s Legacy Through Holiday Magic:🎄
This time of year, brings back some of the warmest childhood memories for many families, but for one Chesapeake resident, the glow of Christmas lights carries a particularly deep meaning. For many families, the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas bring treasured traditions. Those weeks were always defined by a familiar glow—the warm, joyful light of Christmas displays that turned ordinary neighborhoods into something magical. For decades, driving around to admire holiday light displays was a beloved post Thanksgiving tradition for the Panags family. “We’d pile into the car, turn on Christmas music, and just enjoy the magic people created,” recalls Tike Panags’ daughter, Demetra. “We loved seeing how much heart people put into their decorations, it brought us so much joy.” For the Panags family, though, the magic didn’t stop at admiration. It shone brightly from their own front yard. That tradition goes back even further—to the Christmas seasons captured in Virginia Gazettes past. In December 1986 and again in December 1988, her father, Tike Panags, was featured on the front page of the Virginia Gazette for his elaborate Christmas display at their home on Smokehouse Lane in Williamsburg. Even before his daughter was born, Tike’s lights were bringing joy to others—a tradition he carried with pride year after year. “Dad loved Christmas,” his daughter said. “He loved the lights, the excitement, and the happiness it brought people. And he loved sharing that joy more than anything else.” As soon as I could walk, I was outside helping him decorate,” his daughter said. “Every Thanksgiving weekend, we’d turn our home into something out of Christmas Vacation. He made the season magical—not just for us, but for everyone who drove by.” For her, growing up meant learning how to wrap garland, test strains of lights, hold a ladder, and appreciate the magic that comes from creating joy for others. Even after the family moved away from Smokehouse Lane, one thing never changed: Tike Panags always made sure theirs was the brightest house on the block. When he passed away unexpectedly in 2023, his daughter inherited his collection of lights—some pieces dating back decades, lovingly wrapped and rewired through the years. Merging his display with her own has transformed her home into what she calls a “living tribute.” One glowing with memory, meaning, and love. “This year, I realized I’ve become what he once was,” she said softly. “Now I have the brightest house on the block. And I light it up exactly the way Dad taught me. Every bulb feels like a piece of him.”
The Panags-Frink family honors him throughout the year, beginning with the Annual Tike Panags Benefits Tournament each October, a charity event held in his honor. This year that event raised 2,770 meals for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank and so much more. Everscream Manor Halloween display follows, and they close out the year with their Magical Christmas Lights Display—a tradition now carried proudly into its next generation. “He loved making the ‘-ber’ months magical,” she said. “And now I do it for him. When I see people slow down in front of our house, when I see them smile—it feels like Dad is still here sharing the season with us.” Through every light strung and every family who stops to enjoy them, the legacy of Tike Panags continues to shine—bright, warm, and full of the joy he spent a lifetime giving to others.
