Quilts of Valor Piecemakers of Virginia

Quilts of Valor Piecemakers of Virginia Southeast Virginia Quilts of Valor - Volunteer Group The Quilts of Valor Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring and comforting U.S.

military service members and veterans who have been touched by war. It was founded in 2003 by Catherine Roberts, a Blue Star mother whose son was deployed in Iraq. The organization's mission is to cover these individuals with handmade quilts as a symbol of appreciation and gratitude for their service and sacrifice. Our local group was started back in 2019. Here’s a breakdown of what the organizati

on does:

1. QUILT CREATION: Volunteers across the country create beautiful, high-quality quilts. These quilts are often crafted with care, creativity, and attention to detail to ensure they are both meaningful and durable.

2. AWARDING THE QUILTS: The quilts are awarded to veterans and active-duty military personnel who have experienced the visible or invisible wounds of war. These awards often occur in ceremonies or special events to honor the recipient in a meaningful way.

3. SYMBOLISM OF THE QUILT: Each quilt is meant to serve as a tangible reminder of the nation’s gratitude for the recipient’s service. It also offers warmth, comfort, and healing, acknowledging the physical and emotional toll of military service.

4. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: The organization thrives on the support of volunteers who contribute by quilting, donating materials, or helping with administrative tasks. Local groups or guilds often work together on the quilts, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. Since its founding, the Quilts of Valor Foundation has awarded over 400,000 quilts, making a significant impact on both recipients and the volunteers who contribute to the cause. It’s a beautiful way to connect gratitude and artistry in service to those who have served their country. If you would like to make a donation directly to our group, click here:
