Last Thursday, NNPAF partnered with Newport News Public Schools to show how community collaboration can enrich educational experiences. By engaging students at Newsome Park Elementary in an assemblage sculpture project, this initiative not only fostered creativity but also promoted cultural appreciation and civic pride. These collaborations are crucial for enhancing the educational landscape and providing students with unique learning opportunities, and we were so grateful to be part of this!

Life is motion, balance, and the art of adaptation — this is the message behind Carambola, a striking work by Emanuele De Reggi. Inspired by the Italian billiards-like game where balls “jump” over each other, Carambola speaks to the unpredictable nature of life.

The sculpture, perched atop a sphere representing Earth, is caught mid-motion. Is he leaping or vaulting? It’s uncertain — just like the rolling sphere beneath him, always shifting direction. De Reggi reminds us: life is change, and to thrive, we must adjust, balance, and move with it.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember the service members who gave their lives in service to our country.

This month’s newsletter reflects on the changing history of monuments, from traditional memorial forms to postwar and postmodern works that ask us to think more deeply about memory, loss, service, and public responsibility. Memorials do more than mark the past. They shape how communities gather, grieve, reflect, and carry history forward.

Today, NNPAF honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice and recognizes the continued importance of public art and memorial spaces in helping communities remember.

Read this month’s newsletter at the link below to learn more about the evolving role of monuments, counter-monuments, and memorials in public art.
