Awesome Newburyport's second pitch night was another great success! The $1,000 grant went to the Annual International Cultural Festival, created and run by students in the Global Citizenship Program at Newburyport High School.
Aileen Maconi, the Global Citizens Teacher at Newburyport High School, created this course as a three-year program for students in grades 10 through 12. In grade 10, the theme is Empathy—students identify and develop their skills as global citizens by learning to see the world through other people's points of view. Juniors learn about collaboration and cooperation by creating a steering committee that organizes, promotes, and runs the festival itself. Finally, in grade 12, students spend the year on a capstone project, which they present to the public at the festival.
This year's festival features not only student presentations and activities created in classrooms throughout the district, but also local cultural artisans, craftspeople, storytellers, musicians, nonprofits, and businesses with cultural and global connections. The event is scheduled for April 29th and is free and open to the public. Approximately 100 students will be involved in the festival, and based on last year's attendance, we expect 400 or more students, families, and community members to attend!
What a great project to make Newburyport even MORE AWESOME! Our next pitch night is March 24, 2026, with the deadline for proposals on February 24, 2026. We can't wait to see what's next!
