Domestic Abuse, Human Trafficking, Sexual Abuse

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: To build an informed, just, and accountable society so all people can experience supportive and safe relationships free from abuse, exploitation, and oppression. We do this by education, prevention, advocacy, and providing comprehensive services, including shelter, to victims and survivors of interpersonal violence, human trafficking, sexual violence, and other types of crime victimiz

ation.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: We envision being the leading authority on interpersonal abuse and violence, collaborating with other agents of change in dismantling inter-sectional individual and systemic oppression.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆: In 1986, a group of friends gathered around a dining room table to form what was then called Orange County Safe Homes Project. What started as a small organization comprised of a hotline and shelter for domestic violence victims has expanded and grown to an increasingly bold and empowered agency that advocates for change while supporting survivors. We now are the only private, not-for-profit agency in Orange and Sullivan Counties in NY dedicated to assisting survivors of domestic violence, teen dating violence, and human trafficking by providing free and confidential services.

The Pride flag represents diversity, hope, healing, and the freedom to live authentically. Originally created by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978, each color of the rainbow flag carries meaning and reflects the strength and beauty of the LGBTQIA+ community.

This Pride Month, we celebrate love, identity, resilience, and the ongoing work toward a world free from violence, discrimination, and fear.❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

For LGBTQIA+ individuals, abuse may include identity-based tactics such as:

🚩 Threatening to "out" someone to family, friends, employers, or their community.
🚩 Using homophobic, biphobic, or transphobic language as a form of control.
🚩 Refusing to respect a person's name, pronouns, or gender identity.
🚩 Telling someone no one will believe them because of who they are.

Abuse is about power and control. Everyone deserves relationships built on respect and acceptance, not fear.

Kyra’s law has passed! Years of advocacy have finally led to this day! Victims experience every day the failure of family courts to recognize the seriousness of domestic violence and the impact of the behaviors by the abusive parent on their children! It has always felt unfathomable that protecting children and doing everything within our power to keep children safe and alive would take this long to pass.

But today is the day! Thank you to the bill sponsors Assemblyman Andrew Hevasi and SenatorJames Skoufis, advocates, survivors and all of the legislatures that saw this across the line.

To Jacqueline, we honor your incredible courage, strength, and resiliency. The fight no mother should have to wager. We remember Kyra today and always.

We urge Governor Kathy Hochul to sign this bill

🎉 HISTORY MADE. 🎉

Seconds ago, Kyra's Law (A.6194C/S.5998C) passed the New York State Assembly UNANIMOUSLY! 🙌

Nearly 10 years ago, 28-month-old Kyra was murdered by her abusive father. Today, a critical child safety bill bearing her name passed the New York State Legislature. That is the power of love, perseverance, and refusing to give up. 💙

Today, New York has taken a MAJOR step toward making Family Courts safer for children and survivors of domestic violence.

A HUGE thank you to Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi and Senator James Skoufis for their leadership, tenacity, and guidance in getting this legislation passed in the Assembly.

Champions, THANK YOU for standing beside us every step of the way. Through every challenge, every disappointment, and every victory, you never gave up. You are amazing.

Champions, tonight, we celebrate. 🎉

Tomorrow, we keep working. 💪

Kyra's Law now heads to Governor Kathy Hochul’s desk. ⚖️

🚨 Governor Hochul, we respectfully urge you to act on Kyra's Law. Sign this life-saving legislation into law NOW! Help ensure that child safety comes first in New York custody and visitation cases.🚨

Champions, today was a major day for us!

For Kyra.

And, For the next child.

When an abusive partner has access to a firearm, the risk becomes significantly more dangerous. Research shows that access to a gun makes it five times more likely that a woman will be killed by her abuser.

Today Fearless! wore orange in recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Day, to honor survivors, remember lives lost to gun violence, and raise awareness about the connection between gun violence and domestic violence. 🧡

For many survivors, fi****ms are used as tools of intimidation, control, and fear. By starting conversations and increasing awareness, we can help build safer homes, relationships, and communities.

Nearly 4.5 million women in the United States have reported being threatened with a gun by an intimate partner. For many survivors, a firearm is used as a tool of control, intimidation, and fear long before it is ever fired.

Threats with a gun can:
• Prevent someone from leaving an abusive relationship
• Increase fear and isolation
• Escalate the danger faced by survivors and their children

This National Gun Violence Awareness Day, we recognize that preventing gun violence also means supporting survivors and addressing the ways fi****ms are used to maintain power and control.
