My welcoming remarks this morning at our Memorial unveiling:
Welcome to Newberry, Welcome to Lois Forte Park and the soon to be named Newberry Veterans Memorial Park
On behalf of a grateful community, we appreciate that you choose to be here with us to mark such an important occasion.
Today is Memorial Day, originally known as āDecoration Day,ā a day traced back to the Civil War times when soldiersā graves were decorated with flowers. Congress made today official in the Uniform Memorial Holiday Act in 1971.
Today is Memorial Day
A day to reflect.
A day to remember.
A day to commemorate.
Our family prays over this memorial, we pray for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for us, our community, and our country. We owe these soldiers our deepest gratitude.
Thank you to the hearts that conceived such a beautiful work of art and the hands who built it.
Newberry is a character community
We shine brightest in the darkness and today is no different
There is no challenge we cannot overcome except the ultimate sacrifice.
We remember our freedom because others gave of theirs.
We have liberty because they chose death.
We come together to honor those veterans who chose us over themselves.
On the back of the program is why our Veterans Memorial Committee felt so strongly about this project. They wanted:
⢠A place to remind us America is the land of the free because of the brave
⢠A place for our youth to learn and understand
⢠A place to meditate and reflect
⢠And a place to connect our community for generations
I canāt help but look at this broken and incomplete circle this halo and think of the broken hearts that mourn and the incomplete families who sleep restless at night without their soldiers to holdā¦ā¦.ever again.
But I also recognize this is where our community comes in.
Though we cannot replace a loved one, we can serve these hurting families and fill those very same gaps death has left behindā¦
With a helping hand, a giving heart, or a sympathic ear and ,symbolically, one day complete the circle for these families once again.
It is our duty to ensure their sacrifice is not in vain.
To carry on their memories, their stories.
Today is Memorial Day
To remember,
To reflect,
To commemorate our fallen heroes.
Thank you for being here.
Your presence says a lot to me, to our community, and to our Veterans Memorial Committee
May God bless you and God bless our soldiers and their families.

I am blown away by the outpouring of support this morning from Newberry and the surrounding community. I was overwhelmed.
