MicroDreams Foundation

MicroDreams Foundation Empowering female entrepreneurs with microloans, nurturing dreams, fostering growth, improving lives.

The MicroDreams Foundation has its roots in South Pacific Business Development Foundation (SPBD), a microenterprise development organization (MEDO) founded by Greg Casagrande in the Pacific Island nation of Samoa in 2000. SPBD is the first successful MEDO in the Pacific Islands region and is well known for its efficiency and its effectiveness at empowering the poor. MicroDreams (originally called

SPBD-USA) was established in 2002 as a US 501c3 nonprofit organization to help fund the launch and growth of SPBD in Samoa. As SPBD-Samoa grew and became economically viable, several commercial entities stepped in to permanently finance its ongoing growth. This enabled SPBD to payback its MicroDreams start-up financing and gave MicroDreams the opportunity to expand its horizons.

Access to financial services remains a challenge in the Solomon Islands, where 70% of the population lives in rural areas. Our partner, SPBD Microfinance, is working to change this. In the Solomon Islands, SPBD has disbursed over 31,000 microloans, empowering entrepreneurs and supporting financial inclusion. These initiatives align with the National Financial Inclusion Strategy, ensuring more Solomon Islanders gain access to financial tools for resilience and growth. Our thoughts are with the people of Vanuatu after the 7.3-magnitude earthquake. The staff of our partner SPBD Microfinance Network in Vanuatu are safe, and MicroDreams will continue to monitor and share updates once we are able to connect with the SPBD Vanuatu team.

The extent of damage remains unclear, but there are unconfirmed reports of at least one death.

It's Giving Tuesday! Help empower women like Ruth. Donate Today: https://secure.givelively.org/donate/the-microdreams-foundation-inc.

Ruth Wane resides in the vibrant farming community of Burns Creek in Honiara, Solomon Islands. She started a pig farming business to support her small family, but lacked the skills to manage it effectively. Plus, she needed capital to grow the business. In 2018, she joined the Solomon Islands SPBD Microfinance program and secured her first loan of ~$500 USD / $771 NZD, enabling her to breed more pigs and pursue more profitable farming ventures.

Despite the difficulties encountered along the way, 40-year-old Ruth has remained resilient and hardworking, striving to meet her family's basic and educational needs. Her story reflects a strong commitment to her family's well-being despite the challenges.

Ruth shares, "The hard work has always been worth it when I can put food on our table and pay my children's school fees with the money earned from selling piglets"

Today, Ruth's pig farm is thriving, providing not only for her family but also creating employment opportunities for family members and empowering women in sustainable agriculture within the community.

Looking forward, Ruth is determined to continue her farming journey, driven by her aspirations and dreams for her family's future.

Funding partners are critical to the growth of microfinance. Like Kiva, MicroDreams is proud to support SPBD across the South Pacific. Congratulations to SPBD Microfinance Network and Kiva for a successful partnership. Here's to many more years of making an impact!

SPBD Solomon Islands, in partnership with Kiva, has reached a milestone of USD $5 million crowdfunded to support women-led microenterprises. This funding empowers entrepreneurs like Inasi Saeni, who has grown her tailoring and poultry business to improve her family's future.

SPBD and Kiva’s partnership fosters economic empowerment, financial inclusion, and sustainable growth across the Solomon Islands.

Only two more weeks until !

Meet Margreth Bilau, Solomon Islands

Margreth Bilau is a 50-year old married mother of 6 from the community of Burns Creek, Honiara, Solomon Islands. 10 years ago, Margreth ventured into farming. Starting with a small plot of land, she cultivated tomatoes and corn—despite challenges like unpredictable weather and a challenging market.

In 2015, Margreth joined the SPBD Microfinance Network, which provided her with business training and a loan of SBD 3,000 (approximately 675 NZD or 375 USD). This support allowed her to adopt modern farming techniques and expand her operations.

Today, Margreth's farm thrives, sustaining her family and offering employment to her community. She actively engages in initiatives promoting sustainable agriculture and empowering rural women.

Looking ahead, Margreth remains dedicated to expanding her farm and inspiring others with her journey of resilience and determination. For Margreth Bilau, farming is more than a livelihood—it's a means of nurturing growth in her crops and community alike.

Please consider helping empower women through MicroDreams this Giving Tuesday, December 3rd.

🌟 From Tent to Triumph: Pelenaise's Inspiring Journey with SPBD 🌟

In 2011, Pelenaise Folau and her five children were living in a tent. But her dreams of a better life never wavered. With her first SPBD loan of $580, she started a weaving and sewing business, determined to build a brighter future.

Pelenaise moved to Tongatapu to provide better education for her children and laid the foundation for her dream home with her second loan. Over time, her unwavering determination and strategic use of SPBD loans helped her complete her house and start a canteen business. She even bought three cars—one for a taxi business and two for her children's transportation.

Now, as an SPBD Center Secretary, Pelenaise empowers other women to follow their dreams, teaching them budgeting and resilience. Her daughters are also stepping into entrepreneurship, creating traditional wedding and funeral decorations.

Join us in supporting hardworking entrepreneurs like Pelenaise. Together, we can help more dreams come true. 🌍💪🏻
