Chaplain McGuire, thank you for always supporting Lodge 12. You will be missed. Rest in Peace 🙏

With profound sadness, the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police mourns the passing of Chaplain Jim McGuire.

Chaplain McGuire was a pillar of our organization and the law enforcement community. Elected Chaplain of the NJ State FOP Lodge in September 2020, he devoted more than five decades to the Fraternal Order of Police, having been a proud member since 1973. He honorably served the Jersey City Police Department for 33 years, retiring as a Lieutenant after a career marked by meritorious service.

His commitment to the FOP was unwavering—serving as Treasurer of Jersey City Lodge #4 for 14 years and holding numerous State FOP committee roles, including long-standing service on Ways & Means, Tactical North, and Tactical Central Committees. Beyond the FOP, Chaplain McGuire was a dedicated leader within the Honor Legion of the Police Departments of the State of New Jersey, including a decade as Chairman of the Awards Committee.

Chaplain McGuire’s legacy is one of faith, service, leadership, and compassion. He will be deeply missed, but his impact will never be forgotten.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the honor of serving alongside him.

Rest in peace, Chaplain McGuire. Your watch is complete. 🕊️💙

Thank you, Jonny Castro, for this wonderful portrait of our brother, Det. Azcona

On Friday night, members of the Newark (NJ) Police Department’s Intelligence Unit, along with federal law enforcement officials, were working an investigation into illegal fi****ms in the city. The group of officers responded to the corner of Carteret Avenue and Broadway for a report of an individual armed with a weapon. As Detective Joseph Azcona and his partner pulled up to the location, they were met with a barrage of automatic gunfire from a 14-year old suspect. It was reported that 29 rounds were fired at them. Both of the officers were wounded before they ever had a chance to exit their vehicle.

Detective Azcona was rushed to University Hospital in grave condition. His parents and the rest of the family were there by his side when he succumbed to his wounds early the next morning. Joey’s partner, who suffered numerous gunshot wounds, is expected to recover. The teenage suspect was shot by responding officers at the scene and was taken into custody. He has since been charged with Detective Azcona’s murder.

Detective Joseph Azcona was a 5-year veteran of the Newark Police Department, and was promoted to the rank of detective two years ago. He was 26-years old.
