With extreme sadness and respect, we mourn two of “our” heroes who died this morning running into and doing, without a moment’s hesitation, what most would run from. Deepest condolences to, and God Bless, their families, friends, the Newark Fire Department, and all members of our extended Public Safety family. Rest in Peace Firefighters Augusto “Augie” Acabou and Wayne “Bears” Brooks. We Salute You.

In response to the impending May 4th statewide law banning single-use plastic carryout bags, the Anthony Campos Civic Association began passing out free reusable grocery bags within the community.

Team ACCA distributed bags on Ferry Street and gave them to local businesses to give to their customers. In the next couple of weeks, you will find us throughout the neighborhood handing out bags. Don't forget to pick one up.

The Anthony Campos Civic Association got notified that one of our seniors in the East Ward was in the hospital and needed their sidewalk shoveled. Team ACCA, with founder Anthony Campos, got the job done!

It has become a tradition for ACCA volunteers to lend a hand and help clear the snow for our neighbors who may have some difficulty.

Santa (Anthony), his mighty elves (ACCA volunteers), and Santa’s reindeer (Harley Davidson) visited all the Crossing Guards stationed in the East Ward on Monday. ACCA gifted them a token of appreciation to recognize their hard work throughout the year.

ACCA founder Anthony Campos said, “The Crossing Guards are the unsung heroes in our community. Their commitment to keeping our students, teachers, parents, and community safe is honorable. ACCA wanted to show our appreciation for their hard work in all types of challenging conditions. We appreciate our Crossing Guards, and we wanted to show them just how much.”

ACCA played Santa on Christmas Eve by distributing toys to parents on Ferry Street. The toy distribution was an attempt to assist parents in the community who could not afford to gift their child a present on Christmas Day.

Civic Association founder Anthony Campos said, “In the hope of making Christmas Day a little more magical for a child in the East Ward, ACCA decided to play Santa one more time. And let me tell you, being able to help someone, especially a family with a child, fills you with a sense of joy and happiness and isn’t that what the holiday season is all about?”

Team ACCA was busy this holiday season! We distributed new winter coats to schools and churches throughout the East Ward last week. ACCA volunteers personally delivered the coats to each location. We were able to purchase and gift over 100 coats in the hopes of keeping our children warm.

Anthony Campos, ACCA’s founder, said, “We have a responsibility to help our children in every capacity that we can. No child in the East Ward should be without a coat of their own to keep them safe and warm from the elements. I am proud that ACCA, along with our friend Manny (Signature Car Collection), were able to spread a bit of holiday cheer to the children of the East Ward.”

Former Newark Chief of Police Anthony Campos Recognized for His Service in Public Safety by Assemblymember Thomas Giblin

Chief Anthony Campos was publicly recognized for his career in Public Safety by the Giblin Association. The award was presented to Chief Campos at the 30th Annual Anniversary Breakfast at Mayfair Farms in West Orange on Sunday, December 19, 2021.

Assemblymember Giblin said, “[Chief Campos] at a young age, wanted to be in law enforcement, and he wanted to give back [to his community] and found that giving back included being a member of the Newark Police Department. He loves his East Ward. He has done well and has a good reputation, and I felt it was imperative to give some recognition for a job well done.”

Chief Campos thanked Assemblymember Giblin in his acceptance speech and said, “I was simply a kid from Down Neck with no illusions or expectations. I didn’t know what the future was going to bring, but I knew I wanted to be part of something larger than myself. Something exciting. Something where I can make a difference.”

ACCA congratulates our founder, Chief Anthony Campos, on his award and his continued leadership in serving the residents of the East Ward through his work with the Anthony Campos Civic Association.
