Lives in Translation’s VOICE podcast highlights the benefits of multilingualism and diversity.

The initiative of the podcast is two-fold: to highlight our signature program which embeds the humanities in a cross-disciplinary approach through a Minor in Translation & Interpreting Studies, while offering practical practice with community-based internship opportunities of service learning and professional development in the linguistic richness represented by our study body; and to host language professionals to get an inside look at how language Translation, multilingualism, and cultural sustainability can bridge the communication gap in today’s globalized world.

It was a joy to celebrate International Translation Day with our students, faculty, and translation enthusiasts!

Thank you to our panelists - Mercedes, Martha, Lily and Zakiya for sharing their expertise about the craft of translation and their journey of the love of languages that they share!

Translation has the presence of invoking a voice. Each book, each author, each project requires a different approach. There is no single system that everyone agrees upon. As we begin a translation we search for certainty or concreteness in our work, a reassurance that the appropriate word was chosen and that it will be well understood and well received by our target audience. This certainty cannot be guaranteed. This is when our individual style as a translator follows its intuition. Ultimately, we trust the text.

EPISODE 3 with John Keene is now LIVE 🎙

On this episode of VOICE, Stephanie Rodriguez speaks with John Keene, author of the award-winning collection Counternarratives and the forthcoming collection Punks. He is a translator of poetry, fiction, and essays from Portuguese, French, and Spanish. He chairs the Department of African American and African Studies, is Distinguished Professor of English and African American Studies at Rutgers University-Newark.

They discuss language as a superpower, John’s unique process as an experimental writer that engages historical context, and the need for more translation of literary works by non-Anglophone black diaspora authors in English.

John also shares a moving poetry reading!

VOICE is part of Lives in Translation, the Translation and Interpreting Studies program within the Spanish and Portuguese Department, here at RU-N. VOICE was initially created as virtual coffee chats and has now developed into this podcast, to share the stories of how multilingualism and diversity support social cohesion and a strengthening of affinities - identifying the voice of those who contribute to equity and inclusion.

Rutgers University - Newark is celebrated as the most diverse university campus in the United States, bringing visibility to our students who make our campus linguistically rich. Through the Lives in Translation program, our students were able to provide their language services in a new unique way that would assist many during the Covid-19 pandemic: by aiding the city of Newark’s contact-tracing efforts.
