💜The cubby received another large food donation today!
🍝This one comes with sauces, soups, and several varieties of vegan and/or gluten-free crackers and pasta. This time of year ramps are popping up, and they provide a nice flavor similar to garlic & chives, and I noticed some ramp crackers available in the bag!
🥕 I had a question this week about adding fruits and vegetables to the cubby. As our local produce begins to come available, we absolutely would love to stock the cubby with your extra individual fruits and veggies such as tomatoes, carrots, apples, onions, & potatoes. We request that you place these perishable donations on the porch - I’ll set out a table or box for them, so I can keep an eye on them so they don’t rot inside. Remember, no dairy, please!! We don’t have an outdoor refrigeration option!
🧴As you can see in the second photo, our indoor reserve of food donations is well stocked! Please consider helping stock the other bin with toiletries and hygiene products.
Thank you so much!

Yesterday I was outside weeding when someone walked past. He asked for a bottle of water. When I returned with one, I asked his name and introduced myself. Then he asked I had any snacks, so I walked with him to the cubby to see what was there, and told him to take what he needed. He packed and unpacked his bag. He sat on the sidewalk and snacked. When I was done weeding I smiled and asked if he needed anything else before I went inside. He asked if I could get him hot water for the cup of ramen he’d picked. When I came back with hot water, I brought an Apple and a couple of iced cookies we had. He had moved to the stoop to eat tuna on crackers. He pet the dogs when they ran out to see who he was. After he was finished eating, he left.
This morning I asked the kids to check the cubby to see what we needed to replenish, and they came back with this note.
If you’ve donated to the cubby or shared about it, this note is for you. Every item he took from the cubby was donated. I offered an Apple, a smile, and a place to sit. Otherwise, YOU are the ones who fed him. YOU are the ones who let him know he’s seen. Thank you so much 💜

💜 Thank you to everyone who dropped off donations last month! If you’re interested in donating, here’s what we could use this month:
🧼 Soap, shampoo, deodorant, are the most urgent need. Hand sanitizer, dental hygiene items, wipes, tampons, and first aid items are also in high demand.
🥫Snack packs such as granola bars, beef jerky, trail mixes, and PB crackers. Tuna fish & cracker packs, oatmeal packets, Mac & cheese cups, soup cans with a pop top.
🧃As we move into warmer weather, hydration needs will increase. Some drinks we can stock include juice boxes, ensure or protein drinks (unrefrigerated), water bottles, bottles of Gatorade, electrolyte powder add-ins (such as pedialyte or liquid IV).
☔️ Spring weather in Ohio is unpredictable. Consider donating tarps, ponchos, umbrellas, water resistant bags, or even packs of socks to help keep feet dry.
🗓️ If you’d like to claim a specific day to fill the cubby, please reach out to us. Spontaneous donations are always welcome! Thank you so much for supporting our community!

Thank you to The Reporting Project at Denison for helping spread the word about the cubby!

Today, the cupboard is regularly restocked with essentials: things people in the community may need to survive like hats and cold weather gear alongside food and hygiene products.

💜 The Care Cubby got an upgrade! The heavy rains and wind this season took their toll on the cubby. I’m no professional builder… I’m a “what do I have that I can repurpose” builder, and despite watching all the how-to videos, I sometimes miss the mark. Case in point: accidentally using some painted mdf from the garage for the cubby, which which swelled and disintegrated. 🫠 Anyway….
🔨We received a donation of metal roofing that we were able to install to fix the weather-proofing issues.
🧴We received several donations of hygiene items in the last week or so. Soap, deodorant, dental products, etc continue to be in high demand, and our stash runs out quickly.
🥫While working on the cubby roof, I met several new community members, one of whom had family in tow to stock the cubby with snacks and meal options.
Thank you all for your support!!

💜 Thank you so much to everyone who has donated in the last week and a half! Our non-perishables can be stretched to last well into next week.
🧻 We also had a donation of hygiene items that went very quickly. If you’re wondering what to contribute, this is the way to go for now.

I’ve had people ask about contributing to the care cubby, and I’ve been looking for way to involve the community more. Contributions don’t need to be hefty - a couple bars of soap, some oatmeal or ramen packs, or a few extra canned goods from your trip the store. Every item gets used! And if dropping off items doesn’t work for your schedule, ordering from our amazon wishlist or donating a few dollars is always appreciated.
This calendar came out of a suggestion from The Little Free Pantry’s website. If you’d like to pick a day this month to add to the cubby, please send me a message! Of course, prior notice isn’t necessary; you can donate any time!
