Last week, One Community welcomed 50 young volunteers from P.S. 46 and Greene Hill School. Together, they packed over 300 grocery bags containing thousands of cans, grains, pastas, and dry goods for our weekly pantry distributions in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
The students worked in teams, sorting and bagging items. For many, it was their first time engaging directly with the issue of food access. Some left wanting to volunteer more regularly, while others were interested in how they could encourage greater support for local families facing food insecurity.
This is why youth engagement is central to our mission. Inviting young people into service introduces them to the realities of community needs and the impact they can have with their own hands. The work becomes tangible, and the lesson becomes lasting.
Collaborations like this show how schools can be powerful entry points for ongoing community participation. P.S. 46 and Greene Hill School exemplified this through their organization, commitment, and energy, even in cold weather.
We look forward to continued partnerships with these schools and welcome new schools in the area that share a vision for hands-on learning and community support.
