October Weekly Resilience Tip #1 : Manage Teacher Burnout by Resetting your Body and Your Words

This week, we're focusing on the first two steps for managing teacher burnout through emotional regulation — and neither one requires extra time or a quiet room. These two practices are built for the middle of a busy morning. Here are some practical steps you can take:

1. Step 1: Try a 60-Second Body Scan at Transitions - While children are washing hands, lining up, or moving between activities, take one minute to check in with your body. Feel your feet on the floor. Drop your shoulders. Unclench your jaw. Take one slow breath out — a little longer than the breath in. Done a few times a day, this keeps stress from stacking up without you noticing.

2. Step 2: Narrate Your Own Regulation Out Loud - The next time you feel frustrated, try saying it: "I'm feeling frustrated right now, so I'm going to take a breath." This steadies you in the moment, and it quietly shows children what handling a big feeling actually looks like — something they're still learning to do themselves.

3. Practice Both Together - Start with Step 1 during your very next transition today. Then look for one moment this week to try Step 2 out loud — even if it feels awkward at first. These aren't one-time fixes. They're small, repeatable moves that add up across a school day.

A meaningful day in Biddeford. 💚

Kind Mind Founder & CEO Lee Sowles, MPH, recently joined Maine Association for the Education of Young Children, United Way of Southern Maine, and Biddeford Adult Education as part of an Early Childhood Education Workforce Training program helping New Mainers build pathways into the field.

Lee led a session on social-emotional learning, regulation, and practical tools participants can carry with them into early childhood classrooms.

We’re grateful to be part of an initiative that is strengthening Maine’s early childhood workforce while helping new educators begin with regulation and connection as cornerstones.

October can bring a different kind of energy to the classroom. Colder mornings, shorter days, and more time indoors can make familiar routines feel a little different.

This can be a helpful time to pause and notice where children may need a little extra support.

✨ A familiar greeting.
✨ A quiet moment after recess.
✨ A few deep breaths before heading home.

Small, predictable moments can help children reset, reconnect, and feel more ready to learn—and can give educators practical ways to respond when challenging moments arise.

Join us for our upcoming webinar to learn how Kind Mind helps early learning centers reduce challenging behavior and build teacher confidence through practical co-regulation tools for adults and children.

Before children enter the room, take two minutes to arrive yourself.

Journal. Breathe. Practice mindfulness.

Choose whatever helps you feel more peaceful, present, and connected.

It may seem small, but the way an educator enters the classroom helps shape what happens next. Regulation-first practice begins with the adult—and children feel the difference.

Join Kind Mind Founder and CEO Lee Sowles, MPH, for a free virtual conversation about what may be happening underneath challenging behavior—and the practical shifts that can help create calmer, more connected classrooms.
